Lunch & a Movie on October 3 (Join for either or both! Please RSVP!)

As previously announced, The FriendShip’s next Dutch Treat Lunch is scheduled for Thursday, October 3 at 11:30. This time, we’ll be trying out Eggs Up Grill (2930 Devine Street, Columbia, 29205). You can order breakfast all day there—and they also have a variety of sandwiches and salads if you aren’t a pancake person!

After lunch, we have a couple of members/volunteers who have been wanting to see the Downton Abbey movie, and they are going to attend a 2:30 showing at the Nickelodeon. Who else wants to join in?! Here’s how the logistics for the movie viewing will work: Please plan to purchase your own ticket. (You can purchase them in advance by calling 803-254-8234 and talking to someone in the theater office or purchase online.) Then, on Thursday, meet up with the group inside the lobby of the theater at 2:15 p.m.; the group can go in together to get seats.

Please RSVP today by emailing contact@thefriendship.org or calling 803-602-6434! You are welcome to join in the lunch or the movie or both!

The FriendShip's Walking Group Gets Moving Beginning on October 9

The response we've gotten to the idea of starting a walking group has been very positive! We are excited to kick off this new activity starting in October.  (If you are interested in walking but not available at the chosen time, please do let the office know so we can keep track of interest.) Below are the details.

  • Who: Walking group for members and volunteers of The FriendShip; we'll be sure to have groups moving at different paces so that people can walk as slowly or as fast as they feel comfortable.
  • What: Wednesdays at 2:30 (beginning October 9)
  • Where: The gym at Eastminster Presbyterian Church. THE GYM HAS A CUSHIONED FLOOR!
  • RSVP: You are welcome to join the group any time. If you do know that you'll plan to attend the first day (October 9), please let The FriendShip office know so we'll have an idea of how many people to expect as we kick things off.
  • Cost: In order to use the gym at Eastminister, participants will need to join. There is a brief form to fill out and a small one-time fee to pay for either a key card ($10) or key fob ($15). Copies of these forms are available at The FriendShip office so that you can have it filled out and ready to go on the first day--or feel free to go to Eastminster and take care of this in advance.
  • Help needed/next steps: As the group gets established, we'll likely be looking for people who are willing to serve as greeters/hosts on a rotating basis. If you might be interested in assisting, let The FriendShip office know.  Also, we will monitor the walking day/time to see if adjustments are needed. Finally, a couple of people have inquired about outdoor walking. At this point, we'd like to start out on the indoor track but can gauge interest to see if outdoor walking might work for some of the group in the future.

Reducing Your Risk of Falling (October 17)

Dr. Donna Ray will present an interactive program on Thursday, October 17 about reducing your risk of falling. The program will include information on improving fall risk, guidance on simple steps (pun intended!) you can take, and information about how to work with your doctor and others as you to reduce your own risk of falling. This program will take place in the Dining Room at St. John’s Episcopal Church from 2:00-3:00 p.m. Guests are welcome! RSVPs are not required but would be appreciated by Tuesday, October 15 at noon.

Save the date: A Birthday Party for The FriendShip on October 20

October 1 is the fourth anniversary of The FriendShip! We’ll be celebrating this milestone with a birthday party during the afternoon of Sunday, October 20. All members, volunteers, and other friends are invited! Please mark your calendars! More details to come!

Update about Painting Classes

The painting class series that will be offered starting in October is full! The Services Coordinator is finalizing the details directly with those who had expressed interest. If we are able to offer another session later and you would be interested, please let the office know if you haven’t already.

Hope to see you soon!
