MINDSET NewsMay 2019In this issue, read about MINDSET's outreach efforts at mental health-related conferences. Join us on a journey to the Singapore Discovery Centre with our mental health partners. We also appointed the new cohort of Jardine Ambassadors and showed our appreciation to the Jardine Ambassadors who contributed to MINDSET in the last two years. Fostering Singapore's Mental Health CommunityMINDSET is privileged to be part of the Singapore Mental Health Conference 2019 where our Chief Executive Officer, Jeffery Tan participated in the conference’s keynote dialogue alongside industry veterans such as Prof Chua Hong Choon, CEO of the Institute of Mental Health and Ms Porsche Poh, Executive Director of Silver Ribbon Singapore, discussing perspectives on recovery. Apart from being a panel speaker, MINDSET is also honoured when Guest-of-Honour, President Halimah Yacob graced our outreach booth. The Singapore Mental Health Conference serves as a great platform for the mental health sector to come together and share learnings on how to better serve the mental health community. Titled ‘Empowerment for Resilience and Recovery’, the 2019 conference showcased how empowering individuals and the community can play a crucial role in the recovery process.
Apart from this annual conference, MINDSET will also participate in the upcoming International Together Against Stigma Conference on 3 to 5 October as a member of the organising committee. Taking place in Asia for the first time, we look forward to playing our part as we join like-minded global peers to create greater societal acceptance of mental health conditions. Discovering SingaporeEvery quarter, we organise the MINDSET Fun Day, a day out to give mental health clients and MINDSET representatives the opportunity to interact. It also provides caregivers with a rest day. On 1 December, 36 clients and staff from the Institute of Mental Health visited the Singapore Discovery Centre, accompanied by 14 Jardine Ambassadors. The group enjoyed a guided tour around the centre to learn about the history of Singapore and peeked into what great plans lie ahead for our nation’s future. Attendees also had the chance to hop onto a bus tour around the SAFTI Military Institute and had a glimpse of the training grounds of our officers from the Singapore Armed Forces. Staff and caregivers shared that clients enjoyed the visit and thanked the organising JAs for the great experience. People Make All The DifferenceMINDSET Steering Committee, Advisors and the 9th cohort of Jardine Ambassadors Our employees volunteers, fondly known as Jardine Ambassadors are the key drivers in pushing forth MINDSET’s vision through numerous activities and initiatives. A big thank you to all JAs who have contributed to this meaningful mental health cause! On 25 January, we thanked 14 Jardine Ambassadors for their two-year contribution to MINDSET. At the appreciation ceremony, JAs shared their heartfelt experiences as a mental health ambassador and what being part of the MINDSET programme meant to them. MINDSET took the occasion to recognise the outstanding JAs and selfless team leaders by presenting a pen with their names engraved to them. On the same occasion, we welcomed 23 new JAs to MINDSET. Each new cohort of JAs undergo a series of trainings and onboarding sessions including visiting mental health facilities to gain an understanding of Singapore’s mental health sector.
JAs go through ‘Mental Health First Aid’ to recognise the signs and symptoms of different mental health conditions. They also learn how to engage and interact with persons-in-recovery. A day trip to various voluntary welfare organisations on 7 March gave JAs the chance to visit MINDSET’s partners such as Institute of Mental Health, Singapore Anglican Community Services and Singapore Association for Mental Health. The final stop for the day concluded at MINDSET Learning Hub, our flagship project.
