Click here Dear Friend of PLC It’s hard to believe we are already halfway through the year and about to start the July school holidays after a very busy term, which has left me with conflicting emotions as it draws to an end. I say this because I’m very sad to have advised Junior School students, parents and staff today that our Head of Junior School, Louise Peyton, will be moving back to Melbourne at the end of Term 3 for family reasons. This decision was difficult for Ms Peyton as she and I would have liked to continue to work together on the exciting changes which are happening in the Junior School. However, at this time, it is important for her to be closer to her family in Melbourne. Ms Peyton has made an incredible contribution during her relatively short tenure at the School, and I’ve assured her that should she ever return to Perth, she would be warmly welcomed back at PLC. Recruitment for a new Head of Junior School will begin this weekend when we will be advertising Australia-wide to ensure we identify the best person for the role. Our current Junior School leadership team, led by Ms Peyton and comprising Jenny Rickwood (Acting Deputy Head of Junior School), Ayomi Perera (Learning Co-ordinator) and Katy Howes (Wellbeing Co-ordinator) will continue to lead our Junior School and will be supported, as always, by myself, Deputy Principal Dr Andrew Cousins and our Senior Leadership Team. On a brighter note, I could not have been more proud of our PLC rowers last weekend after taking out the Head of the River for the fourth year running. PLC was the host school at the event, which was held in near perfect weather conditions. The First VIII won by seven seconds, covering the two kilometres in seven minutes and 9.55 seconds. Our rowers also took out both the School Girl Head of the River Regatta Champion School and The Perpetual Trophy for School Girl Premiers for the 7th year, a new IGSSA record. Well done, girls! A big congratulations also the coaching staff and to parents, who put so much time and effort into the day. ScholarshipsOne of the most difficult, but also very gratifying, parts of my role is each year interviewing girls who apply for PLC scholarships. It never ceases to amaze me how talented, mature and inspiring our students are. I am very pleased to announce the following current students will be scholarship and bursary recipients in 2019. Year 7 General Excellence Scholarship 2019Ava Gillies Academic Scholarships 2019Madeleine Mayo (Year 6) Music Scholarships 2019Chereen Ng (Year 10) Music BursaryAllegra Foulner (Year 6) Holiday BreakFinally, I would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy three-week holiday break. In particular, we wish all of our Year 9 girls attending the Canberra Tour a wonderful, adventurous trip. Our Deputy Principal, Dr Andrew Cousins, will be travelling with the girls on tour and will then take leave until Wednesday 18 July. I am very fortunate to be heading over to Russia for the World Cup with my husband and son, Angus. I will be away from 1 to 17 July, returning to work on 18 July. Our Director of Information and Learning Technologies, Anna Hu, will be Acting Principal during this time. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Monday 2 July - Friday 20 JulyJunior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Sunday 5 AugustYear 12 Mothers Moray Campsite Sleepover Thursday 16 AugustSenior School Arts Day, save the date Saturday 25 AugustFarm2Fork, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date Chevron City to Surf Fun RunWe would like to invite students and their families to join TEAM PLC in the City to Surf Fun Run on Sunday 26 August. Date: Wednesday 25 July 2018 - Chonny James, Director of Wellbeing Journeys of InquiryThe Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA) recently published a collection of stories and reflections from leaders in schools about their experiences with inquiry pedagogies. In 2012, the Organisation of Economic Co-operation Development (OEDC) recommended “inquiry-based learning as one of the key building blocks of innovative learning environments designed for the 21st century” It went on to identify the development of skills such as the ability to work in team, solve complex problems, and apply knowledge from one lesson to others as vital elements in an inquiry-based process. This week the publication “Journeys of Inquiry” was launched. Our congratulations are extended to Jenny Rickwood, Acting Deputy Head of Junior School, for her chapter in this publication. Also to Erin Jones (Kindergarten teacher), Colleen Garland (Junior School Art teacher), and Paul O’Brien (past member of staff) who ably supported Jenny in the compilation of this paper. Jenny’s article “Inquiry Pedagogy Through the PYP” highlights the PLC commitment to quality education through intentional, reflective and adaptive learning. Jenny has also been asked to host a workshop in Term 4 to take educators through the planning process for implementation of such an approach to learning and to provide guests with an opportunity to see evidence of this approach through visiting our Junior School classrooms. Final AssemblyOur final assembly for the term will be hosted by the Year 4 students on Friday morning in the SRC. Parents and guests are welcome to join us from 8.35 am. There will also be a morning tea treat for the students following assembly to celebrate the end of semester. Thank YouSincere thanks to the Junior School staff for the incredible efforts they have made towards the development of the new Junior School reports this term and the use of SEQTA to provide more regular feedback to parents. Thanks also to the many parents who have participated in recent interviews and conversations about your child’s progress, and for providing feedback about the reports. As you can appreciate, changes like this do not happen overnight. Finally, thanks to staff, parents and children who have provided support to me in my role here at PLC. This is a vibrant, dynamic, energising and supportive place in which to work. Term 3 begins on Monday 23 July. We look forward to seeing you after a safe and relaxing break. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School Winter Holiday ClubJoin in the fun these school holidays! It has been an extremely busy term with girls being involved in a plethora of co-curricular activities and academic endeavour. We have been seriously impressed by the commitment the girls have demonstrated to all areas of school life. Their continued energy and enthusiasm from one day to the next has been a joy to observe; their excitement is infectious! The holidays warrant a period of relaxation and clarity of mind to refuel our girls ready to take on Term 3. Within these holidays, it is important our girls enjoy time outdoors and socialising with their friends and family but also to keep low level study habits in place, keeping their brain active in supporting the transition from holiday to school next term. With this in mind, it is important for girls to also spend time consolidating the content learnt through lessons this term. Over the three weeks, girls will not have the onslaught of new material, making it a perfect time to organise notes from the previous weeks of learning. It would also be a benefit for girls to use the time to get organised and prepared for the coming term. Collecting subject resources, at a leisurely pace will make study and completion of assignments easier tasks to complete. The holidays also provide the opportunity for girls to study together with their peers, enabling opportunities for them to learn in a different style supporting each other with their study. This term, it has been particularly lovely to see how the girls help each other with preparation for exams and assessments. The benefit of peer support has significantly impacted the girls’ achievement. We wish girls a really relaxing holiday making the most of their three-week break, ready to take on the next term with the commitment and passion they have exhibited this term. - Emma Haining, Deputy Head of Senior School (Years 11 & 12) SportIGSSA Athletics SquadThe 2018 IGSSA Athletics Squad was emailed to students on Wednesday 27 June, including information regarding Term 3 training sessions. Students selected into the Athletics Squad also received information regarding July holiday training sessions. Sam Maxwell, PLC Athletics Coach will be holding these sessions and no PLC staff will be in attendance. Term 3 Blackwatch SportsStudents received an email on Wednesday 27 June from Sports Information, advising the Term 3 Blackwatch Sports and how to register. Orchestra Festival ResultsThe Stravinsky and Bartok String Orchestras and the PLC/Scotch Combined Symphony Orchestra performed in the Australia Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (ABODA) Festival last weekend. The three orchestras played at a very high standard and were complimented by the adjudicators in the workshops following the performances.
Congratulations to all the students who took part in this festival. PLC National da Vinci Decathlon CompetitionThe following three teams of girls are making their final preparations before flying out on Saturday to represent not only PLC, but the state of West Australia at this year’s National da Vinci Decathlon;
What is da Vinci Decathlon?The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: Engineering, Mathematics, Code Breaking, Art and Poetry, Science, English, Ideation, Creative Producers, Cartography and General Knowledge. What began as a local competition for Australian public and private schools has grown to be a national and global phenomenon, involving thousands of students from Years 5 to 11. These schools now run individual local and state competitions, in order to choose representatives for the National da Vinci Decathlon Final held each year at Knox Grammar School in Sydney over four days of competition and cultural events. PLC is in the process of becoming the West Australian Chapter School for the event, which makes us the host school and also gives our girls the opportunity to represent every year, as the host school. The opportunity to compete and socialise with the ‘best of the best’ from around Australia will be a memorable experience. I am sure you will join me in wishing all the girls the very best of luck at the National event. Jasmine Barrett Many people are supportive of this change but are perplexed as to how they should now line their own kitchen bins at home. A simple and cheap solution is to line your bin with newspaper instead. Click here for guidance. It would be great to start a conversation in our families about how to reduce the amount of waste we produce as much as possible, and how to recycle the waste we do produce. Unfortunately, two of our large paper recycling bins were recently contaminated by food, so all the paper in those bins can’t be recycled. Please encourage your daughter to be mindful of how to dispose of her waste wisely. Happy Plastic-Free July! Parents’ Committee Term 3 Fee DrawBe sure to pay your $25 subscription fee included in your Term 3 Tuition Account to have a chance to win, while supporting your children.
