No Images? Click here Dear friends, Welcome to your quarterly Ethics Alliance. Ethics plays a huge role in good decision making. Any time we ask ourselves the question ‘what should I do?’, any time we are in a situation where our values are challenged, or where our choices will impact others, we are bringing an ethical lens to our decision. Good decision making is a process. It’s not a coin-flip. It involves careful deliberation, it involves honest self-reflection and it requires an understanding of our own values and principles, our relationships and biases. We’ve been developing an online decision-making tool to help Ethics Alliance members with this process and we’ll be talking about it at our coming series of events. In this issue of the newsletter, Ethics Centre executive John Neil explores the thinking behind the tool and the ways it can be applied in the fast-paced and complex workplace of the 21st Century. The Ethics Alliance is an opportunity to share ideas and experiences across our members. In this issue of Alliance Quarterly, Alison Woolsey from Clayton Utz explores the importance of
diversity and inclusion in sound cultures. At our last events, Daniel Effron told us ‘everybody cheats, just a little’. We have captured the events on film so take some time to check them out with your colleagues who missed out. Cris Parker DECISION MAKING HELPWe're developing a game-changing tool which Alliance members can access later this year. The purpose-designed online platform will help members tackle difficult decisions and we can't wait to show you a sneak peek at our next wave of events in September. For now, check out how it will help you navigate complexity. // 3-minute read 'WHY I HIDE BEHIND HR'Dr Petrina Coventry is an ethicist and philosopher who has spent her career hiding behind job descriptions such as human resource manager to avoid frightening those she works with. She explains why hiring a philosopher who can apply disciplined thinking to complex problems is a little like hiring a unicorn. WHO DO YOU SERVEBusiness leaders are rethinking their social responsibilities. “You don't want to look in the mirror and think, 'Oh I'm making a lot of dosh, but geez it is dodgy’,” says the Professor of Human Rights Law at Sydney University, David Kinley. // 9-minute read INCENTIVISING DISHONESTYThe Royal Commission into financial services has laid out the “dirty laundry” for all to see. Corporate leaders can no longer shrug off warnings that their badly designed incentive programs encourage dishonesty and criminal behaviour. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIONEthics Alliance member Alison Woolsey asks just how important is the link between diversity and inclusion and a sound culture? She explores evidence that ethical decision making in corporations is boosted by cultures high in diversity and inclusivity. // 6-minute read THE MIND OF A CHEATERWhy do good people do bad things? Social psychologist, Daniel Effron, takes a look at how people rationalise their decisions to step over to 'the dark side'. And how they can act in ethically questionable ways without feeling unethical. // 8-minute read If you were sent this email by a friend and would like to sign up to receive it directly each quarter, please subscribe here >> UPCOMING EVENTSOur next Ethics Alliance events, Making Quality Decisions, are on 13 September in Melbourne, 21 September in Brisbane, and 24 September in Sydney.
