Prey for us all by Joab Gilroy

Arkane Studios has a near flawless track record now. From their commercially humble beginnings with Arx Fatalis through to last year's blockbuster hit Dishonored 2, they've created, refined and perfected an unmistakable style with their games. That is, they give you all the tools you need and then challenge you to survive against great odds. At Arkane they don't just want you to break their games, they revel in the idea. Prey, however, heralds one major difference — it's their first foray into the realm of science fiction.
Prey puts you in the shoes of Morgan Yu, Scientist aboard Talos 1 — a state-of the art, Earth-orbiting space station and research facility where they are conducting morally questionable experiments to benefit the human race. They’re studying an extraterrestrial collective called the Typhon. These creatures range from tiny things capable of mimicking almost anything — meaning they could be anywhere — up to great hulking monsters. And like any great space thriller, they've broken containment and you'll need to do something about that.
That means classic Arkane style gameplay, which means part first person shooter, part light-RPG as you use a host of otherworldly abilities to unlock the secrets of the space station. If that sounds familiar, there's good reason; Prey knowingly winks at its System Shock influence — a game very dear to the heart of Arkane co-creative directors Harvey Smith and Raphaël Colantonio — with Looking Glass terminals being named after the developer of the seminal sci-fi RPG.
So you can expect scares — but you can expect more than one way around those scares as well. As Morgan progresses he finds himself capable of taking on more and more alien abilities via Neuromod technology. It starts out small, as you steal the mimicry of the smallest aliens to become a chair, or a mug, but these powers build out into bigger as you progress. You can conjure fire, blast things telekinetically and perform huge feats of strength the deeper you get into the game — and similarly to Dishonored, you'll be able to use these abilities to find solutions to the game's many non-combat related challenges.
Another set of tools at your disposal are the weapons on Talos 1. The GLOO cannon can be used to freeze enemies in place, but you can also create platforms to traverse the game's massive areas with, or to block fuel sources to extinguish fires. There are other weapons — traditional damage dealers like the shotgun or pistol firmly cement Prey in the realm of First Person Shooter — but by adding utility-focused weapons into the mix Prey offers you even more potential solutions to its problems.
It evokes feelings of more than just System Shock, even as it takes Arkane Studios back its roots. Half-Life restricted the player to solving all their problems with the game's weapons, and Prey's utility weapons have similar vibes. The broad plot — an alien conspiracy, an abandoned research facility — elicits further Half-Life feelings, although there's a deeper mystery at the bottom of everything they've shown about Prey so far. There's something shady going on, and a big part of Prey will see you trying to get to the bottom of it.
Prey is pressing all the right buttons, hitting all the right notes as it counts down to launch. They're invoking some of the video game gods by trying to make their own System Shock or Half-Life… but Arkane has spent its entire lifespan proving they're up to the task. Prey is out May 5, 2017, on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
