Kaya (hello) reader,

It is often at this time of year we take a moment to pause and reflect on the year that was. For us, there was no greater opportunity for this than at the WorkCover WA 2022 Conference. The event saw key industry players gather to create opportunities to reflect, inspire and focus on what is yet to come.

With stakeholder engagement and collaboration at the forefront of our strategic priorities, we have built on our strengths and focused efforts on leading a responsive and sustainable workers’ compensation scheme.

Throughout the year we have listened and responded to stakeholder feedback by developing resources to build the knowledge and capabilities required to practise in the Western Australian workers’ compensation scheme.

We have partnered with other government agencies to use data more effectively which has increased the impact of our compliance activities. Additionally, we have continued to deliver timely dispute resolution services to ensure parties can resolve disputes fairly, efficiently and cost effectively so that injured workers can return to work.

As we transition into the new year ahead, one thing remains consistent - WorkCover WA’s commitment to both the scheme and our stakeholders.

I am looking forward to the year ahead and am confident it will be one full of innovation and engagement. On behalf of WorkCover WA, I wish you a joyful Christmas and a refreshing holiday break.

Chris White
CEO, WORKCOVER WA

WorkCover WA 2022 Conference

Last month we proudly hosted the WorkCover WA 2022 Conference to ‘reflect on the past and focus on the future’ as we celebrated 40 years of WorkCover WA.

Just under 500 delegates from a range of organisations came together to learn and engage with contemporary issues surrounding the workers compensation landscape.

We are happy to announce the WorkCover WA Conference will be held on 13 October 2023 and we look forward to seeing you there.

Regional Compliance Education

WorkCover WA visit Christmas Island

WorkCover WA visited Christmas Island from 29 November to 2 December to conduct compliance checks and provide education regarding workers’ compensation.

We aim to ensure all employers, irrespective of where they are located, comply with their legislative obligations. Face-to-face visits are an important aspect of the agency’s communications strategy, which utilises both traditional and contemporary methods to provide education tailored to stakeholder needs.

16 Days in WA

WorkCover WA staff show their support

The 16 Days in WA campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December each year to encourage change to stop violence against women.

On Tuesday 29 November, WorkCover WA representatives attended the 32nd Annual Silent Domestic Violence Memorial March to honour and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives as a result of family and domestic violence. The March provided an opportunity to reflect on the profound impacts of family and domestic violence, and our shared responsibility to work towards change.

Seasonal safety

Tips for workplace safety in the festive season

Although a fun and festive time, the unique pressures of the holiday season can create new hazards in the workplace.

  • Be careful when putting up decorations around the office. Use appropriate tools and ask a colleague for help if needed.

  • Decorations can become trip or fire hazards. Keep pathways clear of decorations and power cables at all times.

  • If working or celebrating outside, be aware of the summer sun and high temperatures. Remember to stay hydrated.

  • The holiday season can be a stressful and busy period. Be aware of your fatigue and stress levels to avoid dangerous distractions that can lead to injury. Support your colleagues and don’t be afraid to reach out to support services like Beyond Blue or Lifeline.
