NEWSLETTER #119 / JUNE 17, 2018 No Images? Click here NAUGHTY, NAUGHTY MARTY? Behind every great fiasco there's an idiot with an erection. According to published reports this week, Sir Martin Sorrell's ignominious departure from WPP may have been motivated by the great one getting caught with his dick in the cash register. It was alleged that Sorrell expensed a £300 hooker on his business card. BTW, Sorrell is worth over half a billion dollars. Oh, and he's an accountant. Maybe this the why the money guys always say "cash is king." For any CEO's out there who might be confused about how to use their company cards, here are a few tips about things you can't charge to the company: hookers, strippers, pool boys, fortune tellers, tattoos, electric guitars, high colonics, botox, and jazzercise. FBI Reportedly Investigating Ad Industry In more depressing news, it was reported by Campaign this week that media buying and selling practices in the US are being investigated by the FBI. I have been writing about corruption in the ad media world for years. If the Campaign report is true, I'll bet you an electric guitar and two jazzercise lessons that it centers on online media -- the most corrupt, fraud-ridden, and sleazy media market in the history of corrupt, fraud-ridden, and sleazy media markets.. If indictments are ever issued, a whole lot of CMOs and "online media experts" are going to be exposed for the wasteful, clueless clowns they are. Ad Tech Completely Incompatible With GDPR I had the pleasure of speaking at the ANFO conference in Oslo this week. On the program with me was the great Dr. Johnny Ryan. Dr. Johnny's presentation was an eye-opening look at how the current system of ad tech is thoroughly incompatible with personal privacy and the GDPR. My takeaway: If the ad industry is ever going to rid itself of the dangerous system of surveillance and fraud it is going to have to tear down the current version of ad tech and start over. The same is true for the EU. GDPR will never accomplish its goals under the current ad tech system. More about this coming soon. The Pornography Superhighway Remember The Information Superhighway? Remember when the web was going to be so amazing? "Cyberspace is achieving something even more enduring and profound: It's changing the very way we think. It is extending our reach, and that is transforming our grasp." (I'm not going to tell you who said that because you'll only get depressed. Google it.) Yeah, well, it's transforming someone's grasp...of the top eight websites visited by Americans, three are porn sites. By the way, don't use your company card. Next Stop, Home My next speaking gig will be next month in San Francisco. I'll be tormenting marketing people in the real estate industry at the Inman CMO Connect conference on July 17. |
