No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC Feedback has been demonstrated as one of the most powerful ways of enhancing student learning. "Teachers' feedback on child’s progress" was one of the top three areas PLC parents highlighted as informing their opinion about our academic programmes in the 2017 MMG parent survey. This emphasis was reinforced by the G8 meetings held with Senior School parents during 2016/2017 about Reporting and Feedback. To support feedback at PLC, the Teaching and Learning Team has developed a model to clarify feedback delivery and how it supports learning. This model builds on what is currently occurring and will be adopted school-wide. Feedback about academic progress will be delivered through SEQTA. This feedback will provide the opportunity for all parents across the School to be active participants in their daughter’s learning in real time. This feedback model has three components. They are: Corrective Feedback:
Developmental Feedback:
Reflection:
In the Senior School, Developmental Feedback will continue to be delivered using SEQTA within ten school days of completing all Summative Assessment tasks. During Term 1, Developmental Feedback in the Junior School will be provided using SEQTA for progress in Mathematics, English and Units of Inquiry. We look forward to seeking input from Junior School parents in the near future about the Developmental Feedback provided about your daughter’s learning during Term 1. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Friday 9 FebruaryParents Sundowner, 6.00 pm - 9.00 pm, PLC Quad, Tickets $35, tickets still available, Book now Monday 12 FebruaryMusic Information Evening, 7.00 pm - 8.00 pm, Eric Page Studio, Music Department Thursday 15 FebruaryParents@PLC Meeting, 9.00 am - 10.30 am, Boarding House Sitting Room, please find the Meeting Agenda and previous minutes on the PLC Gallery. Senior SchoolThe PLC Lighthouse will now deliver most of the programmes previously provided by PLC’s Outdoor Education staff. Please view the PLC Lighthouse website for all the options available to Senior School students. The classes will be held weekdays before and after school and will be held in existing spaces in the Senior School until the Lighthouse opens. - Laura Allison, Director of Wellbeing Support Your Daughter EveningThe Junior School Support Your Daughter evening was held this week and was well attended across all Year levels. Sincere thanks to those parents who were able to join us and to those who forwarded apologies and have followed up with staff. Presentations from the evening are now posted on the class Communications pages through home.plc.wa.edu.au. In a number of the class sessions, there was discussion about the use of the PLC app. This is a handy tool for advising of absentees or late arrivals, checking the calendar, and accessing information through SEQTA for Parents (“Connect” on the app). Parents are unable to connect to the Communications pages through the app and are recommended to enter home.plc.wa.edu.au in their browser to access this information. Community ConversationsCommunity Conversations provide an opportunity for parents to hear about educational initiatives and contribute to development and ideas. This year’s first Junior School Community Conversations for new parents will be held on the following dates: Thursday 15 February (new parents) Register at www.trybooking.com/UBOK if you are interested in participating. At this stage, the agenda is open and this is an opportunity for new parents to indicate areas for discussion. Previous discussions have been around reporting, peer relations, recognition awards policy, and the Primary Years Programme, however, we want to hear what would be the most useful information to you. If you would like to nominate areas for discussion, please email louise.peyton@plc.wa.edu.au. Junior School Inter-House Swimming CarnivalDate: Thursday 1 March Students are required to be dropped at the pool at 8.00 am and will return to school on buses for a normal afternoon programme. If you wish to take your daughter from the pool when the Carnival concludes at midday, please indicate this on the permission slip that will be going home with the students next week. Parent-Teacher MeetingsMeetings will be held in Week 5, with registrations opening next week through Links. This is an opportunity to speak one-to-one with your daughter’s class teacher about her transition to her new Year level and initial assessments and work commitments. We hope you are available to participate in this process from 26 to 28 February. Junior School AssembliesJunior School assemblies are held in the SRC most Friday mornings in Week B from 8.40 am. Throughout the year, each Year level and each of the departments take responsibility for running an assembly. We encourage parents to join in these regular community events. Co-curricularIt has been wonderful to see many students participating in the co-curricular programme. On Monday afternoon, we had 24 students involved in Science Bites and 20 students involved in JS Learning Hub. The Junior School Library was certainly hopping! Parents of Year 6 students are reminded that, as part of their transition to Senior School, Year 6 students are able to access the Learning Hub in the Senior School Library from dismissal to 5.00 pm on Mondays to Thursdays. Students are encouraged to gather in Junior School and cross to Senior School together, then be collected from the Senior School/McNeil Street slipway by 5.00 pm. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School The Big Splash WAThe Big Splash WA Art Trail was launched on Saturday 20 January with 36 unique dolphin sculptures popping up around the Perth CBD. The Art Trail is a fun, engaging and positive event that is sparking lots of conversations about mental health wellbeing to remind all children that they can speak about their feelings; they are not alone and real help is available. The students in the Junior School created their own magnificent dolphin, named Dolly, during Arts Week. Dolly will join The Big Splash WA Farewell Event in March. Dolly is currently on display in the JS foyer if you would like to pop in and admire it. It is moments like these that make me realise how lucky I am to work at such a beautiful school, with such amazing girls. In that moment, I saw everything that is important at our School - determination, resilience, fortitude, inclusiveness, kindness and love. It was wonderful to see and something that will stay with me forever. Cyber SafetyLast night, we were fortunate enough to have Jordan Foster, Director of YSAfE, an organisation supported by the office of the Children’s e-safety Commissioner to provide cyber safety training across Australia. Among the many things that Jordan shared, was information about the growing incidence of mobile phone addiction. In a Deloitte survey in 2017 about mobile phone use in the 16 - 24-year-old age group, 50 per cent indicated they used their phone too much. Things that may be taking a toll on mental health include habits such as checking apps in the hour before bed (79 per cent of us do this, according to the study) or within 15 minutes of waking up (55 per cent). Jordan shared the following suggestions for finding balance when using social media:
Jordan also advised the girls to post things that leave a positive digital footprint. These could include posting things that present you in a positive light, doing service to others, or engaging in sport or other community activities. Setting up and posting on a Linkedin profile was also advised as a way to create a positive footprint. There is no doubt there are positives to be had from engaging in social media, but it is wise to ensure a balance is maintained and that precautions are taken to ensure safe use. - Sharon Anderson, Head of Senior School Student AchievementsCongratulations to Lucy Jarrett (Year 11) who received an A+ result in her Grade 8 AMEB Piano Exam.
