SANORD together with Karlstad University, Sweden, the host, welcome all the delegates to come to the SANORD Symposium 2014 at Karlstad University. The Symposium will officially kick off at the welcoming reception in the evening of 10 June. The venue map, session schedules, and abstracts are in the symposium programme available on the symposium site. We look forward to meeting all our delegates.

The SANORD Board makes funding available for Research theme group leaders to organize seminars, conferences and other activities directly related to their North-South multilateral cooperation and to build networks that have the potential to significantly contribute to realizing the objectives of the organization.

The 2015-2016 SANORD Vice Chairperson and Board members elections is officially underway. The current term of office of the Chair, Vice Chair and Board members expire in December 2014. In accordance with the SANORD Statute the SANORD Council (all SANORD members) must hold an election to fill the positions that will become vacant as of 1 January 2015 – 31 December 2016.

Professors Per Assmo and Åsa Danielsson of LiU spent four weeks at Rhodes University as part of the second year of the three-year exchange programme (2013-2015) between Rhodes and Linköping University. Prof. Per taught on the GOG 201 Space and Place in Southern Africa programme for 2014 and co-presented practical work utilising Swedish Geography’s acclaimed Time-Geography approach. > Read more

The project "Fighting poverty through alcohol misuse prevention in Malawi" (ALMA) was developed and carried out in collaboration with researchers from Norway (SINTEF, University of Oslo and Hedmark University College) and Malawi (University of Malawi and National Statistical Office) and a reference group consisting of policy makers and stakeholders in Malawi. > Read more

The Welgegund atmospheric measurement station, located approximately 100 km west of Johannesburg (Gauteng) metropolitan area in South Africa, is operated jointly by the North-West University (NWU, Potchefstroom campus), the University of Helsinki (UH) and the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Other important partners especially in aerosol research are University of Eastern Finland (UEF) and Aerodyne Inc. >Read more

New research from Uppsala University shows that saturated fat builds more fat and less muscle than polyunsaturated fat. The findings have recently been published in the American journal Diabetes. > Read more

South Africa's drive to create a competitive and food secure state was boosted on Tuesday, 15 April, with the launch of the Department of Science and Technology (DST)-National Research Foundation (NRF) Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Food Security at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). The DST-NRF CoE in Food Security will bring together a cohort of experts and researchers from 19 South African and international institutions to study the systemic and structural factors that shape food access and dietary choice. > Read more

Professor Cheryl de la Rey, Vice Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria, hosted a function for the High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) on Food Security and Nutrition of the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) at the University on Tuesday, 29 April. The seventeen-member panel consists of international experts appointed from as many countries to prepare papers on food security issues to advise on and guide policy decisions and programmes. > Read more 

The Chairperson of the African Union, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, delivered a public lecture at the University of Pretoria on the role of research in African universities and how it can bring about development in the continent of Africa.> Read more

UniPID will participate in the presentation event of the Evaluation of Finland's Support to the Higher Education Institutions - North-South-South and HEI ICI programmes - on Monday, June 16, 2014, starting at 9.30 GMT, in Helsinki. The event is organized by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland.
