No Images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC Currently the Year 10 girls are in the middle of selecting their subjects for Year 11, 2019. To inform the decision-making process there has been a range of peer mentoring sessions, information evenings and one-to-one counseling. The guiding principle for this process is supporting individual choice. One of the most important messages offered to girls is that they need to make their own choice, rather than a group decision with their peers. To support this choice, the girls can select from three different pathway options (IB Diploma, WACE ATAR and WACE General) and an extensive range of subjects. The timetabling process is driven by student subject selection. The subject offerings are also constantly under review to ensure that they are relevant and of interest. This year we have introduced Marine and Maritime Studies to the mix of WACE subject offerings. A stumbling block for many girls occurs when they start to consider their post-schooling and career options. New research indicates that job market perception can have a significant affect on students’ engagement in school. Perception about how the Year 11/12 coursework connects (or does not connect) to college and career appears to have a greater impact on their motivation and achievement than previously thought. Some of the key messages from the research were;
These findings reinforce how important it is for the girls to be provided the opportunity to select subjects that they are not only passionate about, but can see the long-term relevance in what and how they learn. Seeing relevance is achieved through a conceptual driven framework, learning experiences that have a real life application and the integration and development of skills extending beyond the classroom. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Friday 1 June (School closed)Mid-Term Break Tuesday 5 JuneWinter uniform to start being worn Saturday 9 JuneYear 6 Ladies Long Lunch, 1.30 pm Monday 2 July - Friday 20 JulyJunior School E-magination Winter Holiday Club Thursday 16 AugustSenior School Arts Day, save the date Saturday 25 AugustFarm2Fork, save the date Friday 26 OctoberOpen Garden Day, save the date Winter Warmer AppealPLC’s Term 2 Appeal is our community’s annual donation to the thousands in Perth unable to access food due to financial hardship. After the break, students will be required to wear their Winter uniform. With the change in weather this last week, I’m sure they’ll all be happy to pull out those blazers and tights! An email detailing the Winter uniform was sent to parents this morning. Following on from the Cyber-Safety parent workshop held last week, and recent staff Professional Development on the URStrong Language of Friendship programme, we are looking at offering parent-daughter programmes in the near future. Details will be available after the break. Year 10 students who are travelling to Cambodia in September are currently fundraising for their building programme whist in-country. Some of the girls will be offering a sausage sizzle on Monday 11 June. Just as you would monitor your daughter’s ‘normal’ television viewing, it is equally important to do so for services such as Netflix. Parents are able to set limits on the types of shows young people can access. To do this, you need to enable parental controls and then restrict to the appropriate level. For your convenience, I have included a screen shot below. Naturally, young people cannot view without having login credentials. Since Netflix is accessible whenever in a wifi area and thererfore can be viewed outside of the home, if you choose to share these details with your daughter, parental controls may be worth considering. - Sharon Anderson, Head of Senior School IGSSA Basketball and Soccer TrialsStudents in Years 7 - 12 received information on how to register for IGSSA Basketball and Soccer trials being held this term.
