Throwback ThursdayThe Extraordinary Life of Katharine GattyThe extraordinary life of suffragette Katharine Gatty came to an end in the Loreto Convalescent Home in Albert Road, Strathfield in 1952. A journalist and later a nurse, she became a prominent member of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in London before World War I. With the motto ‘Deeds, not words,’ Katharine joined their campaign of civil disobedience, smashing windows and chaining herself to the gates of Hyde Park. Imprisoned nine times, she embarked on several hunger strikes and was force-fed, receiving the Hunger Strike Medal from the WSPU. She spent her last years in Strathfield.
