Faculty head to the Olympics, opportunities to support learners, professional development fun and your invitation to a special advanced viewing.. all in this issue! Family MattersYour updates from the University of Alberta Department of Family MedicineJanuary 2018 Message From the ChairThe weather has gone full Alberta on us, swinging from one extreme to another, but here in the Department we were steady-on. The work of planning and launching the new clinic in partnership with MacEwan University is moving along well – but it is a lot of work indeed. The "interim clinic”, where our clinic preceptors are now providing the student health services for MacEwan in the interim before the new clinic opens, got underway this month. Kudos to Mirella Chiodo, Mark Perrault, Lindsay Mercer and Pete Bell in particular for all their work on it! The AMHSP (the acronym formerly known as the AARP) continued to require quite a bit of our time and attention as well. The next round of individual service agreement drafts went out this month. Planning began for the changes to our Northern Alberta Academic Family Physicians corporate entity. Those changes will be necessitated by the new AMHSP master agreement, and we’re still sorting out exactly what they will be. Many meetings are involved! Finally, we learned that there will be changes in the rules on non-AMHSP earnings for our clinic preceptors, and are working with AHS to clarify how that will play out. To end on a more upbeat note, the research program’s strategic planning process took a big step forward with a daylong strategic planning session in late December. Donna Manca, Olga
Szafran, and the research strategic planning committee engaged the UA’s planning consultants to organize the day. It was a rousing success, with effective values clarification exercises and narrative development that will help set our already-amazing research group on the track to the next level!
