Influenza and Emerging Respiratory Pathogens team at the BC Centre for Disease Control

My name is Kaitlyn and I work as a project coordinator with the Influenza and Emerging Respiratory Pathogens team at the BC Centre for Disease Control. A main focus of our program is managing the Canadian Influenza Sentinel Practitioner Surveillance Network (SPSN) for influenza surveillance and vaccine-effectiveness (VE) monitoring. The Canadian SPSN is the only network in Canada to monitor how well the annually-revised influenza vaccine provides protection using community-based physicians in four provinces of Canada, including BC.  Each year, findings are shared with provincial and national  expert committees to inform public health response and recommendations and contribute to the WHO bi-annual vaccine strain selection for northern and southern hemispheres.

We are continuously looking to grow our BC sentinel network and recruit new family physicians to participate in vaccine effectiveness monitoring  throughout the flu season. By including more physicians in our network we are able to increase the power of our analyses and improve our understanding of vaccine protection, ultimately improving the health of millions of vaccine recipients each year.  We have previously posted about our network in the Vancouver Division of Family Practice newsletter and received a lot of positive interest.

I have attached a flyer if you would like to learn more. You can also visit our website http://www.bccdc.ca/health-info/diseases-conditions/influenza/sentinel-network-spsn

R3 pilot

There will be a R3 position created this year in Nanaimo.  UBC CCFP-EM St Paul’s based program is offering a one time, 1 year re-entry opportunity, in a Nanaimo-based pilot experience from Aug 1, 2018 - Aug 1, 2019.    Core rotations will mirror those offered at St. Paul’s, but with an increased rural/ dual practice exposure.  Academic sessions will be provided locally and in conjunction with the home program.  Successful completion of the year will allow the candidate to write the CCFP-EM qualifying exam.  Application criteria: practicing BC physician; completed a family practice residency in good standing; has shown interest and commitment to providing care in non-urban settings.  This is a PGY III Position with corresponding salary, benefits and expectations in terms of call and service provision.  If interested, please send required documents, as outlined on the UBC Enhanced Skills website http://postgrad.familymed.ubc.ca/enhanced-skills-program/admissions to Dr. Tina Webber by May 15th

Tina.webber@ubc.ca.  Interviews will be conducted in person or by telephone, with selection by June 1st, 2018.

Cycle of Life Tour

TEAM PROGRESS
$10,647 RAISED TO DATE!

Our 2018 team of 10 cyclists ride in memory of family and friends to raise much-needed funds for the very important services of Oceanside Hospice. Our previous teams were very successful.  Each of us has committed to raising $500.00 but our team goal is much higher - $12,000! Oceanside Hospice Wheeler cyclists ride for a special person; often someone who received care from our hospice or whose family was supported through their grieving for a loved one. This year several of our team are from the Craig Bay Chain Gang who will ride in honour of lost member cyclist, Johnnie Johnston, a hospice volunteer whose family requested donations in Johnnie's name go to Oceanside Hospice.
