Dear Friend of PLC Welcome to Term 3 I hope you and your family had a lovely three-week break. Over the holidays, I was extremely fortunate to tick off some major bucket list items by travelling to Russia with my husband and son, Angus, for the World Cup, which was just incredible. We had tickets to a number of games including 3 v 4 in St Petersburg where the atmosphere was amazing and we were humbled to be a part of such a wonderful world event. One of the most thought-provoking experiences of my trip was
a walk to see the sculptural composition “Children-victims of adult vices”, created by author-sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin in 2001. These incredibly detailed sculptures depict the vices of alcoholism, child labour, drug addiction, prostitution, sadism, ignorance, pseudoscience, war, poverty, theft, capital punishment and advocating violence.
The figures surround a little golden girl and boy with the central piece showing a figure representing the greatest sin – indifference to these vices and their impact on children. We are fortunate to live in a peaceful country where injustice against children is scorned upon and any known injustice dealt with promptly; however, we have a responsibility to ensure our children are educated regarding these vices and their impact on children around the world.
Tours The many and varied trips and tours we offer at PLC often include important learnings for our students on vices within our and other societies both past and present. Our girls travelling over the holidays to Tanzania, Ningaloo and Canberra (in particular visiting places of significance such as the War Memorial) have all, in their own way, added to their knowledge that assists them ward off indifference to historic and current injustices. While the learning has been important, it was great to hear all these trips went well and I’m confident they will have created memories that will last a lifetime. A Busy Term Ahead Term 3 will begin with a Principal’s Assembly on Monday morning and will mark the start of another busy term at PLC. Many of us, I’m sure, are looking forward to seeing this year’s School musical – Chicago, which starts next week, and the girls are already busy planning for the ‘best day of the year’ – Arts Day, which is on 16 August for the Senior School and 24 August in the Junior School. We are also looking forward to Farm 2 Fork on 25
August. The new Music Village will start to take shape in the coming weeks as we embark on the move to refurbish Finlayson House for our Year 7 boarders and the design and planning work for the new Music Centre. More information about this move will be provided to Music and Boarding families as we near completion of the Music Village. I’m looking forward to seeing our girls and catching up with their news from their holidays.
