No images? Click here August 10, 2022 Dear member, It’s almost the middle of August and summer seems to be fading away. To make the most of the remaining days of summer, we have two great events coming up over the next couple of weeks. Our next Health Innovators’ Meetup is for any early-stage researcher or entrepreneur with an idea in the lab who would like to bring it to market. We have an exciting panel of seasoned entrepreneurs who will share their experiences and discuss common mistakes and pitfalls. For people who are looking to build their dream team, our next In Conversation features Shannon Phillips, who is the co-founder of Unbounded Thinking. In that session, we will discuss psychological principles that help to motivate an innovative team forward. This episode’s Meet Our Community member is Amy Porter, a self-professed research nerd, who discovered “that sometimes, the biggest problems can have the easiest solutions”. She is in the process of incorporating her charity 1in100Hearts Foundation and joined the Health Innovation Hub to “access professional coaching, support resources, and vast networking opportunities” for her vision to “start saving the lives of babies across Alberta and beyond”. Please connect with Amy to learn more about her foundation and how congenital heart diseases affect babies across the globe. Like Amy, we are reaching others in the health innovation ecosystem daily. Our newest member is NovusTX Devices Inc. You can help us expand our reach by forwarding the digest to your network to support the momentum in health innovation across Alberta. Until next time. What does health innovation/ innovation in health mean to you?Health innovation is finding a means to bridge a gap in care, knowing that the solution you provide will have a positive impact on your community. 2. In your opinion, what is the state of the health innovation ecosystem in Alberta, Canada and globally? My introduction to Health Innovation was a result of me trying to better understand my own lived experience. I discovered that sometimes, the biggest problems can have the easiest solutions, leaving me wondering, "Why isn't this being done already, and what can I do to help?" The experts I reached out to are spearheading research, locally and globally, in bettering health outcomes for fetuses and neonates diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), proving once again, that Alberta really is a world leader when it comes to health innovations and research. Health innovation is putting together a diverse founding team of individuals with varied skills, marrying a clinical condition with a human experience, to create the first national charitable organization of its kind, and only the second globally, working to increase the prenatal detection rate of CHD in infants. 3. What motivated you to join the Health Innovation Hub?The unique expertise that has spearheaded 1in100 Hearts Foundation comes from my profound lived experience of giving birth to a child with a critical congenital heart defect (CCHD) and my formal training as an educator. I know what it is that my not-for-profit charity will accomplish and I want to ensure that the team that I assemble, as well as my organization, are built for success. Being a member of the Health Innovation Hub means that I am no longer trying to build a long-lasting not-for-profit charity alone. Being able to access professional coaching, support resources, and vast networking opportunities will allow 1in100 Hearts Foundation to get to work faster, adding a layer of confidence to all who invest that this charity has a solid foundation.4. How would you describe yourself in one sentence?I am a queer, self-identified research nerd who loves a good pun and always wears her heart on her sleeve.5. What is the one thing you are most excited about right now?I am so excited to get this charity incorporated because then we get to start saving the lives of babies across Alberta and beyond.
