He received the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his service at Pozières during August 1916. ‘He several times took the place of a runner who had become exhausted, crossing and re-crossing a particularly bad corner of the firing line.’ At Bullecourt in 1917 he earned the Military Cross for organizing a party of bombers, driving the enemy back and establishing a block against repeated attacks. ‘… Compelled to give ground due to a lack of bombs … [he] was the last man of his platoon to leave.’ |
