Can you imagine by 2023 one billion more people with access to health services, one billion more kept safer from outbreaks and emergencies, and another billion living healthier? WHO’s “Triple Billion” goals provide focus for the world to make people healthier.

 

Lassa fever in western Africa

With five countries in Western Africa reporting cases of Lassa fever, WHO has scaled up its efforts to support the region’s response to the disease. While reported cases are occurring during the Lassa fever season in countries where the disease is endemic, the speed of escalation is of concern.

 
 

41 attacks 

WHO warns of increasing attacks on health facilities and workers in Libya, in both frequency and scale. WHO has documented more than 41 attacks targeting health workers and facilities throughout 2018–2019 across the country. These attacks killed 6 health workers and patients and injured 25 health workers. An additional 7 health workers were also assaulted during this period.

For three days, Sadia Hussein struggled in labour with the birth of her first daughter. The traditional birth attendant could not deliver the baby due to the constricted birth canal – the direct result of the female circumcision Sadia was subjected to when she was 10 years old. Mother and baby were both in jeopardy. And the pain that Sadia can never forget was a deep agony. From her own tormenting moment, Sadia began her own campaign to tell girls and families the dangers of female circumcision in Kenya.

 
 
 

Surge in measles cases in European region

More children in the WHO European Region are being vaccinated against measles than ever before but clusters of susceptible people are missing out on vaccination, resulting in a record number of people affected by the virus in 2018.

 

UNIFEED: cervical cancer

On the occasion of World Cancer Day on 4 February, WHO focused on the global health challenge of cervical cancer and new momentum to eliminate the disease, one of the leading killers of women worldwide.
