The Graduate School's Professional Skills Programme The Graduate School’s programme of professional skills development courses runs between mid-October and the end of June each year. No workshops will be delivered in July, August or September. You are therefore advised to book Graduate School courses in good time to ensure that you can meet the professional skills requirements by June.
As part of the College’s commitment to health and well-being a new Smoke-Free Policy will be in place from 1 August. This means that smoking by staff and students will not be permitted on or within 20 metres of College land – including all College student accommodation. This change will bring all of our campuses into line with NHS policy, as all hospital campuses have been smoke free for the past two years. Full information can be found online A range of support is available via the College and the NHS for students and staff who are considering quitting smoking. For example, students and staff can self-refer to Occupational Health to receive six free weekly sessions, delivered by a trained advisor. Find out more information about the support available GTA Recruitment BSc Medical Biosciences is a new undergraduate course from the Faculty of Medicine, starting in October 2017. We are looking to recruit GTAs to assist with the lab practical teaching. Labs will run every week during term time on Mondays and Fridays, and will mimic a real working laboratory as closely as possible. We would like to recruit a bank of GTAs to cover these in 4 hour shifts, either covering the morning (9am-1pm) or the afternoon (2pm-6pm). You will work alongside teaching fellows to supervise and guide first year undergraduate students. We are looking for GTAs with experience in at least one of the following techniques: cell culture, qPCR, western blot, or who have demonstrated in any of the current lab practicals run for undergraduates or at masters level courses in the faculty. You should feel comfortable troubleshooting techniques, and discussing results with the students. Training sessions will be provided for more information on how we are running these practicals. If you are interested, please contact k.flower@imperial.ac.uk with a brief summary of your lab experience.
On Friday 17 November 2017 the Imperial College Outreach team and South Kensington institutions (including the V&A, Science Museum, the Royal Albert Hall and the Royal College of Music) will be hosting Creative Quarter 2017, offering thousands of students between the ages of 13 and 19 the chance to explore work in the creative and STEM industries and careers. For more information please see the website here. We are currently looking for teams or individuals across the academic and student community to run interactive exhibits in the College main entrance between 11:15-14:45; this can be based on your research/area of expertise and will be similar in format to the Imperial Fringe events where attendees ‘drop in’ to the exhibits. This will be a rewarding opportunity to communicate your science to young people and inspire them to consider STEM and creative careers and to raise their aspirations. Please email b.jessani@imperial.ac.uk to sign up or if you would like more information. Changes to Campus Services provision The College is making some changes to how and where some services are provided on campus. The changes are being made to enable reinvestment elsewhere as part of our continuing commitment to an excellent student and staff experience. The Campus Services team aims to provide the best possible service and experience for our staff and student community, through everything from catering outlets and hospitality services, to sports facilities, student accommodation, the Student Hub, and Early Years provision. These services operate at a loss – they are subsidised by millions of pounds a year to try and keep prices cheaper than the high street. College therefore regularly looks for ways to offset those costs, where services are under-used or not cost-effective. Only changes which clearly enable reinvestment to the wider benefit of the community, against a minimal impact on staff and students, are considered. The new changes being introduced mainly consist of shorter opening hours for some outlets, and reducing some cooked meal options. Find out more about the changes The Graduate School's BlogTake a few minutes to check out the Graduate School's blog. There are some great posts from current students, student representatives, alumni as well as members of staff; all of which highlight the diverse community you are part of here at Imperial College London!
