Throwback ThursdayAlfred George (Sandy) Macnab (SERN: 2452)The First Battle of Bullecourt was hastily launched on 11 April 1917. The lack of planning would prove disastrous and 1170 Australians were taken prisoner on that day alone. Private Alfred (Sandy) Macnab of the 13th Battalion was one of them. A clerk from Strathfield, he received a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken captive. His battalion suffered heavy losses when they attacked a strong German-held position without the promised support of the tanks. Spending the remainder of the war in the prisoner of war camp at Soltau, Germany, he was repatriated to Britain at Christmas 1918. Australian prisoners of war at Soltau, near Hanover, Germany.
