No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC Students become most creative when the process of learning is exciting and engaging. Using unconventional, imaginative approaches to teaching enables students to take risks, be innovative and take personal responsibility for their learning. Using maker-centered learning experiences, students develop new skills and technologies as they build, tinker, re-design and hack. From the start of 2018, the Creative Arts and Technology Department will bring together the disciplines of Visual Art, Textiles, Media, Materials, Digital Technologies and Information Technologies. These are all subjects providing girls the opportunity to create, innovate, develop skills and drive their own learning. In Years 7 and 8, the discipline skills from each of these subjects will be drawn together as students develop a coherent understanding of the design process from initial concept to final resolution. PLC Creative Arts and Technology staff have been working with Curtin University as part of the Innovative Schools Consortium to hone curriculum delivery to ensure it is providing the opportunity for students to drive their own learning. Whilst we are removing the discipline names, the girls will experience focused skill workshops in each discipline, enabling them to experiment with a range of possibilities. They will identify their own strengths, discover what skills they would like to develop further and subsequently foster these skills in a range of open-ended design problems. "By reframing creativity as an educational experience students participate in, rather than something one either is or has, we can relieve the stress of fostering creativity within individuals and allow for the emergence of new pedagogical practices aimed at developing teaching and learning environments where creative ideas — and the broad spectrum of individuals who participate in those ideas — may flourish." Our theme this year is “Escape to Everywhere". To enable working parents to attend, this year’s event will be held in the evening, from 6.00 pm to 7.00 pm, on Tuesday 5 December. The anticipated increase in demand for seating has required the School to make this a ticketed event with an initial allocation of three tickets per family. Further tickets may be released at a later date, subject to availability. We are relying on an honour system for the successful distribution of the tickets and we thank you in advance for your co-operation. A fair distribution of tickets will allow every Junior School student to have family members in attendance at this event. Please note that a ticket is not needed for your daughter(s) in Years 1 - 6, as they will be seated in the performance space with their Year groups. If younger children and siblings are attending, a ticket will be required. Invitations to the Junior School End of Year Assembly, including ticketing information, will be emailed to Junior School families next week. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School Kapture Photography - Special PhotosWe have been advised by Kapture Photography that all special photos taken this year will be removed from their website at the close of Term 4. Students in Years 6 - 11 received an email this week, providing information on how to register for the trials. Further trials will also be held in Term 1 2018, to include new students to PLC. New students are not required to attend Term 4 trials and are welcome to email sports@plc.wa.edu.au to register for Term 1 2018 trials. 2018 IGSSA RowingStudents in Years 8 - 11 received an email inviting registrations for the 2018 Years 9 - 12 IGSSA Rowing season. Term 4 Swim MeetStudents in Years 6 - 11 (ie Years 7 - 12 in 2018) received an email inviting them to register to attend the Penrhos/Wesley/Scotch/PLC swim meet, being held Thursday 23 November, at Penrhos College. It is strongly recommended for students wishing to be part of the 2018 PLC Swim Squad to attend this meet, as swim times will be taken which will contribute towards IGSSA swim team selections. This swim meet coincides with the first Years 9-10 IGSSA volleyball and tennis trials. Students are to attend the swim meet as their first priority - this will not hamper their trialling for IGSSA volleyball/tennis team selections.
