Click here Dear Friend of PLC Another Busy Week at PLCEvery week at PLC is a busy one and this week has been no exception, with Concert Band and Bartok Orchestra performing over the weekend and the opening night of Footloose tonight. Festival of ScienceOur Junior School came alive with the Festival of Science on Wednesday and Thursday. This was a wonderful opportunity for every girl to explore and engage in a range of Science activities ranging from coding to bicarb rockets and exploring the solar system. Girls' Schools and STEMLast year, a study cited by the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools found that girls’ school graduates have higher levels of self-confidence in their science-related skills compared to female graduates of co-ed schools. It also included data concluding that girls’ school alumnae reported great confidence in their ability to use technical science skills, understand scientific concepts, generate a research question, explain the results of a study and determine how to collect appropriate data. Whilst much of the future is unpredictable and the world continues to change at a rapid rate, we continue to see an increase in STEM-related opportunities and career paths to ensure we give our girls the skills and confidence to pursue. A 2018 article in the Harvard Business Review explored the six things successful women in STEM have in common. Number 1 was confidence, or “telegraph confidence”. This is not surprising given that in any area of life, it would be fair to say that confidence contributes to success. So whilst I am sure this week has provided for a great deal of ‘fun’ exploring Science in the Junior School, I also have no doubt it has also contributed to growing levels of confidence in our youngest students in both their capacity and their skills. A huge thank you to Siobhan Rooney and the Junior School staff for organising the 2019 Festival of Science. - Cate Begbie, Principal PLC Parents School Fee DrawCongratulations to Mark and Yvette Hanikeri, parents of Tahlia (Year 11) and Siena (Year 9), who are the lucky winners of the Term 3 PLC Parents School Fees Draw.
