NSW Surf Patrol Season Kicks OffOver the weekend 21,000 active volunteer surf lifesavers from 129 surf clubs returned to protect the public on beaches across the state. “Our surf lifesavers are an essential part of our community and I want to thank all those who selflessly dedicate their time to protecting others on beaches and along our coastline,” said NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services, David Elliott. Illawarra Lifesavers Get Royal TreatmentAustralian beaches are well-known for their propensity to attract English tourists, but it was an unusually high-profile Englishman who visited North Wollongong Beach this month. Western Sydney, Your Beaches Need You!In an effort to recruit more members, Garie Surf Life Saving Club are launching a unique training program to attract people from diverse communities across Western Sydney. Coastal Drowning Spike in NSW - Lifesavers on High AlertNSW has recorded a 22 percent spike in coastal drowning deaths over the 2018-19 year with 44 people tragically drowning along the NSW coast. This figure is above the 10-year average (41) Masterclass Empowers Next Generation of LeadersSeven NSW lifesavers attended the recent National Leaders’ Masterclass at the University of South Australia, with some participants describing it as “life-changing”. New Rescue Equipment for NSW Surf LifesaversSurf Lifesavers now have even greater capacity to save lives with the handover of new support vehicles and Rescue Water Craft (jetskis) through enhanced rescue funding provided by the NSW Government. Collins, Borg and Pierce Qualify for Iconic Nutri-Grain Iron SeriesIt was a picturesque weekend at Coolum Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast to kick off the 2019 Nutri-Grain Iron Series qualifying rounds. Over 100 of Australia’s top athletes lined up hoping to achieve their dream of competing in the elite series. Only six males and six females would qualify. Pop Down to a Pop-Up and Support Your Local SLSCThe Envirobank pop-up collections are back at 20 Surf Life Saving Clubs from Sunday 6 October. Mass Rescue of 40 People Wins Rescue of the YearA mass rescue of any kind is a big operation for a patrol to manage. On 17 February 40 people fell victim to being swept off a sandbar suddenly at North Cronulla. In a single moment what seemed like a perfect day at the beach could have ended in tragedy. This incredible operation has now been awarded with both the Surf Life Saving NSW Rescue of the Year and Australian Rescue of the Month. |
