Geologist, Joseph Edmund Carne (1855-1922)NSW Government Geologist Joseph Edmund Carne spent his retirement years at Dimlands, 9 Dickson Street Strathfield. From country NSW, he mastered bushcraft early but his attempts at gold mining were unsuccessful and he took up geology. He joined the Geological Survey of NSW in 1879, travelled widely and wrote a number of works. The Carne River in Papua New Guinea was named for him. He was variously Geological Surveyor and Curator of the Mining and Geological Museum. In 1920 he received the Clarke Medal from the Royal Society of NSW. Dimlands was named for the Carne ancestral home in Wales.
