No Images? Click here Dear friend of PLC The academic year for girls in Year 11 and 12 commenced at the start of Term 4. With things now in full swing, the girls are very quickly setting high expectations about what they hope to achieve in the new academic year. The connection between setting and achieving high expectations, however, is often tricky. So how can high expectations about our learning be transformed into academic success? "Learning isn’t a competition to define winners and losers. It’s about constant reflection and recalibration to find the best path to growth." - David Dockterman. In Turning High Expectations into Success Dockterman synthesises a range of thought leaders such as Daniel Pink to offer five research-based tips to convert goals into growth. They are:
These to me are five wonderful tips to consider as we reflect on our 2017 learning journey and start to consider what 2018 may hold. In the coming weeks, the remaining girls and little boys across the School will receive their Semester 2 report. This feedback provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate growth and carefully consider our expectations prior to the start of a new academic year. Being reflective is such an important skill to continually refine and develop at every stage of learning. It is one of the IB Learner Profile attributes and as an IB community, we encourage and develop the ability to reflect as a way of understanding and supporting our learning. - Dr Andrew Cousins, Deputy Principal Please RSVP by Monday 6 NovemberThe Principal's Thank You Sundowner is an opportunity for Dr Hadwen to thank you for your valued support of PLC throughout the year and she would love to see you there. Date: Wednesday 15 November Lighthouse NewsIf you missed the October issue of Lighthouse News last week, you can view the email here. The newsletter included all the latest announcements and updates regarding the PLC Lighthouse, as well as a final message from 2017 Wellbeing Captain, Lily Dixon. - Laura Allison, Director of Wellbeing Mathematics: Everywhere and EverydayMathematics is visible, expressing itself everywhere, in almost every facet of life – in the natural environment, through the Arts and technologies in our hands. It is a language in itself and a segue to science and engineering, which enables us to describe our understanding of all that we observe. Despite its ubiquity, negative attitudes towards Maths are prevalent in society so it is important to develop a positive growth mindset in our students at a young age to ensure they believe they can succeed, and to a high level. Dr Jo Boaler, Professor of Mathematics Education at Stanford University and Director of youcubed, stresses the value of a positive mindset and the importance of Visual Mathematics to improve performance: “Visual Mathematics is an important part of Mathematics for its own sake and new brain research tells us that it helps brain connections and even helps students learn numerical Mathematics”. This approach to teaching Mathematics, through a very visual, hands-on approach, is nothing new to teachers and girls in the Junior School, but is perhaps quite different to how adults in our community were taught. It is nice to be at the cutting edge of research and know that our girls are being given the best opportunities to develop their Maths skills. - Louise Peyton, Head of Junior School ICAS Maths 2017A number of girls from Years 4 to 6 achieved very good results when they participated in the ICAS Maths Assessments last term. Congratulations to all the girls who participated, in particular Eirwyn Siford (Year 5) and Zara Ball (Year 5) who achieved Distinctions, placing them in the top 11 percent nationally. - Michelle Clayton, Gifted and Talented Teacher Scholarships 2019Applications for Academic, General Excellence and Music scholarships will open on Monday 6 November. Year 9 Defining Project ExhibitionOur Year 9 students extend an invitation to their parents and family to attend the first Year 9 Defining Project Exhibition. This will be our first year running the project in Year 9 and, as with the Year 10s in August this year, the girls have effectively completed the process as an online course. For the uninitiated, the Project is a nine-month long education journey beginning at the start of Term 2 this year. Students engage in “purposing” - coming up with a personal vision and goal, and then plan a timeline for the achievement of their goals. At the beginning of Term 3, the girls were allocated supervisors and commenced work on their projects. The Project can be completed at any stage before the exhibition, however, students must submit an annotated portfolio of evidence by 4.00 pm on Friday 24 November demonstrating their level of success in attaining their goal. The exhibition of student works will be open from 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm on Monday 27 November in the McNeil Street Senior School building. It is expected that all Year 9 students attend. Student AchievementsCongratulations to Bryzlyn Sin (Year 7) who was a national finalist in the 2017 "Write Here Write Now" writing competition. Read her story. Congratulations to Athena Paizes (Year 12) who graduated from Level VIII Suzuki at WAAPA on Sunday 22 October.
