No images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC A Message From Ingrid and EllaYear 12 BallLast weekend's Year 12 Ball was an amazing experience that we will never forget. To have all of our friends in one room; dancing, smiling and having a great time was something really special. It was a night to celebrate all the amazing friendships and bonds forged at PLC. With endless compliments, smiles, hugs and dance battles, it highlighted how special the relationships with the 'gals' around us really are. The GalsThis week we are creating a parallel to Valentine's Day - Galentine's Day. Our focal point of Galentine's Day is the relationships that we have with the 'gals' around us, because as the saying goes, it's always 'Sisters before Misters'. Letters of NoteWe reflected on one of our favourite books called 'Letters of Note' by Shaun Usher. This book is a compilation of 125 letters from people all around the world, each capturing the humour, seriousness, sadness and brilliance that make up all of our lives. In particular, we reflected on one of the letters written by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Author of The Great Gatsby), which he sent to his 11-year-old daughter while she was away on camp. The letter contains advice about which aspects of life to worry about and which aspects to not. These include 'courage' and 'efficiency', as well as things not to worry about, such as 'anybody getting ahead of you' and 'growing up'. Friendship: A Two Way StreetTo us, friendship is a two way street; you must give some to take some. Fitzgerald's letter illustrates this perfectly through his unwavering support for his daughter. He offers her advice but encourages her to carry it out independently and therefore allows her to develop personally; allows her to become a better person through her own effort. Friendship functions in a similar fashion, you are there to make each other better people through your shared experiences, have fun and enjoy life. However, if you give too much support, the other person can’t handle you. If you give too little, you appear distant and unconcerned. So where is the sweet spot? The optimum level of support? Build Each Other UpAs teenage girls, we feel that the optimum level of support is achieved through a ratio of 7:3 between encouragement and advice. Advice includes constructive criticism with regards to behaviour, whilst encouragement includes positivity, fun times, laughter and hope for one another. Girls, it's important to remember that we need to build each other up, not tear each other down. As a result of this, we challenge you to self reflect on your friendship support levels by asking yourself the following:
If you find your answer to any of these to be enlightening, take a step back, reassess and set goals for yourself. Self reflection makes us better and more effective people: and also better friends. If you don't feel like setting goals, that's fine. However we ask that you follow our golden rule: Treat others the way THEY want to be treated. Let's make this Galentine's Day a celebration of love, good quality friendship for all and fun! - Ella Miels, Head Prefect From The PrincipalMusic Centre UpdateIt is exciting that demolition works have now been completed at the site of our new Music Centre. These works were undertaken during the school holidays to ensure there was no disruption to students during term time. We had been hopeful that construction would start almost immediately on the new building, however, we have asked our Architect to refine the building design to ensure the construction is within budget. We are now expecting works to start mid-way through this year and will keep families updated throughout the semester. I would like to thank all of the staff in the Music Department for their ongoing efforts and commitment during this transition period, while we await the new Music Centre. Our Music programme is one that has great benefits for all students of all ages and we look forward to the completion of the project. Bike RacksA reminder to all students who ride their bicycles to school, that there are two sets of bike racks available for their use. One is in the undercover parking area of the PLC Lighthouse and the other on the verandah of the View Street Senior School building, outside the Woodwork Rooms. - Cate Begbie, Principal Whole School AssemblyDate: Tomorrow - Friday 14 February Welcome SundownerDate: Tomorrow - Friday 14 February 2020 International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Monday 9 March Make A Difference Week Movie Bushfire FundraiserDate: Wednesday 11 March Farm2Fork | A Community Food EventDate: Saturday 14 March Volunteer OpportunitiesFarm to Fork and Make a Difference Week (students Years 9 - 12)A service opportunity for up to 15 students passionate about cooking, being waste wise and educating others has become available at PLC during Make A Difference Week and Farm to Fork. My sincere thanks for the long hours and hard work put in by our parent committee who were led by Michelle Grist. I would also like to pass my thanks on to Mr Oliver Craze (Year 12 Co-ordinator) for his thorough organisation of the logistics for the evening and to the staff who assisted with the supervision for the night. Connections with the Junior SchoolThis year, we aim to continue to build our connections with the Junior School. Last Friday, the Junior School invited our student School Councillors to attend their special Year 6 Presentation Assembly. Our older girls loved getting a chance to congratulate the Year 6s on being elected to their new roles and also used the Assembly as an opportunity to remind the Junior School that everyone has the capacity to be a leader. Our Head Prefect, Ella Miels and Deputy Head Prefect, Ingrid Ledger, spoke to the audience and emphasised this point to the group, while also providing some great insights into their own leadership journey. Whole School AssemblyTomorrow morning, we are embarking on a Whole School Assembly, where the Junior and Senior School will come together as one. The Assembly will begin with a smoking ceremony to recognise and celebrate Indigenous culture, followed by a range of items presented by both Junior and Senior School students. We look forward to welcoming our Junior School students to the Hugh Baird Sports Centre and hope that this can be a regular event at PLC.
