Dear Friend of PLC

A Message From Ingrid and Ella

Year 12 Ball

Last weekend's Year 12 Ball was an amazing experience that we will never forget. To have all of our friends in one room; dancing, smiling and having a great time was something really special.

It was a night to celebrate all the amazing friendships and bonds forged at PLC. With endless compliments, smiles, hugs and dance battles, it highlighted how special the relationships with the 'gals' around us really are.

The Gals

This week we are creating a parallel to Valentine's Day - Galentine's Day. Our focal point of Galentine's Day is the relationships that we have with the 'gals' around us, because as the saying goes, it's always 'Sisters before Misters'.

Letters of Note

We reflected on one of our favourite books called 'Letters of Note' by Shaun Usher. This book is a compilation of 125 letters from people all around the world, each capturing the humour, seriousness, sadness and brilliance that make up all of our lives. In particular, we reflected on one of the letters written by F. Scott Fitzgerald (Author of The Great Gatsby), which he sent to his 11-year-old daughter while she was away on camp. The letter contains advice about which aspects of life to worry about and which aspects to not. These include 'courage' and 'efficiency', as well as things not to worry about, such as 'anybody getting ahead of you' and 'growing up'.

Friendship: A Two Way Street

To us, friendship is a two way street; you must give some to take some. Fitzgerald's letter illustrates this perfectly through his unwavering support for his daughter. He offers her advice but encourages her to carry it out independently and therefore allows her to develop personally; allows her to become a better person through her own effort.

Friendship functions in a similar fashion, you are there to make each other better people through your shared experiences, have fun and enjoy life. However, if you give too much support, the other person can’t handle you. If you give too little, you appear distant and unconcerned. So where is the sweet spot? The optimum level of support?

Build Each Other Up

As teenage girls, we feel that the optimum level of support is achieved through a ratio of 7:3 between encouragement and advice. Advice includes constructive criticism with regards to behaviour, whilst encouragement includes positivity, fun times, laughter and hope for one another.

Girls, it's important to remember that we need to build each other up, not tear each other down. As a result of this, we challenge you to self reflect on your friendship support levels by asking yourself the following:

  1. Do you fall too far left or right on the scale?
  2. How often do you make critical comments every day?
  3. Are you always the first and last person to speak?
  4. Do you consider the feelings of others before acting?

If you find your answer to any of these to be enlightening, take a step back, reassess and set goals for yourself. Self reflection makes us better and more effective people: and also better friends. If you don't feel like setting goals, that's fine. However we ask that you follow our golden rule:

Treat others the way THEY want to be treated.

Let's make this Galentine's Day a celebration of love, good quality friendship for all and fun!

- Ella Miels, Head Prefect
- Ingrid Ledger, Deputy Head Prefect

Music Centre Update

It is exciting that demolition works have now been completed at the site of our new Music Centre. These works were undertaken during the school holidays to ensure there was no disruption to students during term time.  We had been hopeful that construction would start almost immediately on the new building, however, we have asked our Architect to refine the building design to ensure the construction is within budget. We are now expecting works to start mid-way through this year and will keep families updated throughout the semester.

I would like to thank all of the staff in the Music Department for their ongoing efforts and commitment during this transition period, while we await the new Music Centre. Our Music programme is one that has great benefits for all students of all ages and we look forward to the completion of the project.

Bike Racks

A reminder to all students who ride their bicycles to school, that there are two sets of bike racks available for their use. One is in the undercover parking area of the PLC Lighthouse and the other on the verandah of the View Street Senior School building, outside the Woodwork Rooms.

- Cate Begbie, Principal

Year 12 Ball

The highly anticipated Year 12 Ball was held in the Convention Centre last Saturday! The Ballroom was transformed into an enchanted forest, complete with a stunning walkway of greenery and trees, and beautiful floral centre pieces. The Year 12s and their partners were treated to an extraordinary aerialist display and spent the evening enjoying the photobooth and dancing the night away.

My sincere thanks for the long hours and hard work put in by our parent committee who were led by Michelle Grist. I would also like to pass my thanks on to Mr Oliver Craze (Year 12 Co-ordinator) for his thorough organisation of the logistics for the evening and to the staff who assisted with the supervision for the night.

Our Year 12 students were impeccable in their behaviour and looked stunning in a wide array of beautiful outfits. They have set a great tone for the start of their final year of school.

Connections with the Junior School

This year, we aim to continue to build our connections with the Junior School. Last Friday, the Junior School invited our student School Councillors to attend their special Year 6 Presentation Assembly.

Our older girls loved getting a chance to congratulate the Year 6s on being elected to their new roles and also used the Assembly as an opportunity to remind the Junior School that everyone has the capacity to be a leader.

Our Head Prefect, Ella Miels and Deputy Head Prefect, Ingrid Ledger, spoke to the audience and emphasised this point to the group, while also providing some great insights into their own leadership journey.

Whole School Assembly

Tomorrow morning, we are embarking on a Whole School Assembly, where the Junior and Senior School will come together as one. The Assembly will begin with a smoking ceremony to recognise and celebrate Indigenous culture, followed by a range of items presented by both Junior and Senior School students.

We look forward to welcoming our Junior School students to the Hugh Baird Sports Centre and hope that this can be a regular event at PLC.

Year 9 Support Your Daughter Evening

Families of our Year 9 girls were invited to join the Year 9 Support Your Daughter Evening on Tuesday night, where various key staff members spoke about the ways in which, both staff and parents, can help their daughters navigate this year.

There is a recording of the night available for families who could not attend.

IGSSA Swim Squad Training

With the IGSSA Swimming Carnival only four weeks away, students selected in the IGSSA Swim Squad have been asked to attend a minimum of three training sessions per week. Mr Ryan Steenkamp (PLC’s Head of Swimming) is available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the PLC P.E office, should students need to discuss balancing swimming with school commitments. Students can also contact Mr Steenkamp via email – ryan.steenkamp@plc.wa.edu.au.

Most swim trainings are scheduled before school, however we have three afternoon trainings available at Scotch for those swimmers who are unable to attend at least three morning sessions, and those who think that they would benefit from additional training.

If students plan to attend any of the afternoon sessions, they are to:

  • Email reception@plc.wa.edu.au by recess on the day they are planning on attending training, advising that they will be attending that afternoon's training session and require transport on the Scotch/PLC bus.

  • Be outside the PLC Chapel by 3.28 pm to catch the PLC/Scotch bus to Scotch (please be prompt, as the bus will not wait).

  • Arrange to be collected from Scotch College at 5.00 pm. There will be no bus returning back to PLC after training.

  • On arrival to Scotch, students are to meet with Mr Steenkamp (PLC’s Head of Swimming) who will mark their name on the attendance list.

A training schedule can be downloaded from the Sports Senior School page. If you have questions relating to swimming at PLC, please contact Mr Ryan Steenkamp, PLC’s Head of Swimming - ryan.steenkamp@plc.wa.edu.au.
