Links eNewsletter - Term 3 Week 4 Dear valued member of the PLC community, A Message From the Deputy PrincipalPLC is Buzzing – It’s the Best Day of the Year!American singer, Andy Williams, may have been referring to Christmas when he sang “it’s the most wonderful time of the year”, but here at PLC, the week of Founders’ Day and Arts Day is a very special time. On Tuesday, we celebrated our 106th Founders’ Day and it was such a pleasure to enjoy this event with more than 80 old collegians and special guests. Our oldest Founders’ Day guest, Noreen Craig, graduated from PLC in 1939 and celebrated her 99th birthday this year. The birthday cake was made by a gifted student Audrey (Year 12) and cut by Sylvia Brandenburg, our 1951 Head Prefect, her daughter Jane Brandenburg who is both a PLC Old Collegian (1979) and a longstanding staff member in the Science Department, and Sylvia's great-grandaughters, Ida and Alice. Sylvia also celebrated her cohort's 70th reunion this month and today she is celebrating her own birthday. Despite the span in years between these Old Collegians and our current students, there was no gap in their collective sense of shared experience – having all been students at PLC. The huge round of applause for our guests made clear the students’ delight at having these women in our midst. The atmosphere of warmth, appreciation, and fellowship was something truly special. Time and time again, graduates from PLC feel a lifelong bond to the School and want to return and remain connected with the school community. This was echoed by our Chaplain, Rev Nalin Perera, who spoke of the great value of a living legacy and reflected that ours is made possible by the traditions, values, and integrity of our founders, instilled at the School’s inception and passed on to each new generation for more than 100 years. We really do have so much to be thankful for when we celebrate our founding and I hope everyone reflects this week on the things that are special to them about our school. Today is our annual Arts Day and we thank Arts Day Co-ordinator, Kate Montague, who gives so much of her time in the lead-up to ensure the smooth running of this special day. This week, the School has been buzzing with anticipation, preparation, and excitement. Staff and students have been able to get an early sneak-peek of one of the highlights of the day – the amazing cake decorating – which has been setting up since Monday. All around the school, every free space has been taken up by rehearsals for House Dance and Choir. At 7.00 am this morning was the peak of the buzz as staff and students alike lined up in the cold in their costumes. The now annual Staff Act was only ever intended to be a one-off in 2009, but has now become such a drawcard that it is a regular feature. Arts Day is, for many, the very best day of the year – it is a celebration of fun, creativity, camaraderie, and talent. It breaks the routine of the school day to give students the freedom to support and marvel at one another. It is wonderful for the whole Senior School to come together at the end of the day for the culminating House Choir competition and the announcement of the 2022 House Captains. Students rehearsing their House Dance performance during the week. I hope you’ve had an amazing 2021 Arts Day and enjoy the four-day Mid-term Break. - Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Book DayWe look forward to one of the most enjoyable days of the year on Tuesday – Book Day! We will start the day with a costume parade, conducted by our Semester 2 Leaders, at 8.45 am in the Junior School Swim & Recreation Centre. This year, we are parading in Houses from Years 1 to 6, and in class groups with assistance from the Leaders for Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, and Pre-Primary. The theme this year is ‘Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds’ and costumes can follow the theme or their favourite character in a book. I know I have my costume organised! Please note, as the students will remain in costume for the day, suitable enclosed footwear is required so that they can participate in their regular school activities, such as Physical Education classes. Junior School Assembly – Hosted by Year 5On Friday, we were fortunate enough to enjoy a wonderful Assembly, hosted by our Year 5 cohort. We enjoyed an insight into their learning and a demonstration of everything that might go in a wellbeing toolbox! Mid-term Break ReminderWe wish all our Junior School families a fabulous time during their Mid-term Break and look forward to seeing everyone back, rested and recharged, on Tuesday. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School Mid-term Break

What Happened This Week in the Boarding HouseBusy Weekends in the Boarding HouseAs usual, the Boarding House was very busy this weekend with girls going bowling, spontaneous adventures to Leederville and Fremantle ending with delicious deserts, shopping at Karrinyup, sports activities, and madly preparing for Arts Day. The corridors have been filled with the sounds of girls singing and feet stomping as they rehearse for House Choir and various other performances. We are very excited to see them perform and know they have been working very hard to prepare. This weekend, there has also been a focus on some more quiet activities such as making friendship bracelets and decorating envelopes and letters to send to loved ones. In the coming weeks, we would like to provide more activities like these to promote a sense of calm and to help the girls relax and unwind. The girls are very much looking forward to a weekend at home or away, to relax and recoup and we wish them a wonderful Mid-term Break. - Katherine Hazlewood – Deputy of Wellbeing and Pastoral Care Free Dress Day – Friday 27 AugustStudents contributed $10 each earlier this year for the privilege of participating in all three (3) Free Dress Days for 2021.
