The thing that struck me the most about our research program was not the quantity of it (though that is quite impressive) but the nature of it. When Danica nudged me to get this column written too (sorry Danica!), it occurred to me that what I noticed about our research is really true of the whole department: we look outward. Our research programs are very much devised with and conducted with the community, be that patients, practitioners, educators, or policy makers. We do work that matters for the communities that matter. That’s as much true of our teaching and our practice as it is of our research. We’ve never been about us. Realizing that made me once more proud to be part of this department. I thought that was worth sharing.
