September 2017 Reminder - Town Hall Meeting this Thursday, Sept 7All faculty, staff and learners are invited to the annual State of the Department Town Hall. The Department Chair and Associate Chairs will present the address, highlighting our achievements from the past year and the plans for the future. Pediatrics Town Hall - State of the Department Address Welcome to new faculty member Jillian PopelJillian Popel joined the Department of Pediatrics August 15, 2017 as a clinical lecturer in the Division of Hospital Medicine. Pediatric Pulse sat down with new faculty member Jillian Popel for a Q & A to find out more about her background and her new role as clinical lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics. First of all, welcome to UAlberta as a new faculty member! While your role is new, you are not a stranger to this university. What is your academic background? I did my medical school training here at UAlberta, and graduated in 2012. And then I did my pediatric residency here and completed that in 2016. Last year I did a one-year fellowship in child maltreatment pediatrics, mostly here, in collaboration with University of Toronto. The fellowship was generously funded by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. And now I am working half time as a hospitalist and half time at the Child and Adolescent Protection Centre at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Support the Little Heart Heroes Camp at the Superhero Soiree Oct 28The inaugural Little Heart Heroes Camp was held August 4-7 near Wabamun lake. Twenty kids with heart disease attended the camp specifically designed for their medical needs. Several Ualberta pediatric residents and faculty attended as 'camp counselors' and medical support to give the campers (and their parents) a worry-free weekend. CBC Edmonton, Radio-Canada and Global news visited the camp and interviewed pediatric resident, and camp founder, Devin Chetan. The camp would not have been possible without the support of the Little Heart Heroes Fund, created in association with the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation. Pediatrics work featured at EXPO 2017 in KazakhstanMichael Hawkes (l) and UAlberta medical student Qaasim Mian at EXPO 2017 Future Energy in Kazakhstan earlier this month. Michael Hawkes and medical student Qaasim Mian had the amazing opportunity to represent the University of Alberta earlier this month at EXPO 2017 Future Energy. Hawkes and Mian travelled to Astana, Kazakhstan to present at the international exhibition, the theme of which is to highlight solutions and paths to ensure sustainable energy management. Their presentation, Solar Powered Oxygen Delivery, was featured as a novel humanitarian use of alternative energy. Mian is involved in the scale-up of solar oxygen and was also invited to Kazakhstan. EXPO 2017 is open from June to September and is expected to draw five million visitors. Pneumonia is the leading cause of death worldwide for children under five. It can be effectively treated with oxygen therapy, but traditional energy sources in developing countries can be scarce. Solar Powered Oxygen Delivery shows that solar energy can be used to effectively support oxygen therapy in locations that are off the grid. Who's who in the zoo? Legacy of Hope: Glenrose team finds new ways to help those affected by prenatal alcohol exposure through advocacy and researchSeptember 9th is Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day (Public Health Agency of Canada). Gail Andrew has spent nearly 30 years devoted to advocacy and research for those with FASD. Despite a growing body of work that shows hope for those with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), researchers are still fighting intense social stigma in their work, says long-time FASD advocate Gail Andrew of the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital: “There’s a public misconception that they’re throwaway kids and will all end up in jail, so why Andrew’s interest in FASD began in the 1980s, as a pediatrician and behavioural consultant in Camrose. She noticed that some of her young patients didn’t respond to treatment and wondered if prenatal alcohol exposure could be the culprit. “Many of my patients were in foster care and had come through a lot of adversity,” she says. “It just began making sense with my own self-directed learning.” Students join faculty for WCHRI studentshipsStudents benefited from the supervision of pediatric and other faculty members, as part of the 2017 Women & Children's Health Research Institute (WCHRI) Summer Studentship Program.
