Report from the Dental Society President

On Tuesday 27 October 2015, the Dental Society held their Presidential Inauguration to hand over from the outgoing Student President to the new President. With entertaining speeches from Ankur Patel (Past Student President), Dr Dominic Hurst (Past Staff President), myself as Student President, and Dr Mangala Patel (Staff President), it was a thoroughly enjoyable evening for those in attendance.

The Dental Society enjoyed success last year as co-hosts of the British Dental Student Association Conference in March. Our brand new outreach centre in Stratford was officially opened by the one and only Kate Richardson Walsh MBE, and we launched our newly designed website: www.dentsoc.co.uk

With an enthusiastic committee and great staff support, I look forward to my term as President to maintain and continually improve the student experience at Barts and The London.

I wish you all a very happy new year.

Vishal Barot
Student Dental President
Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry

Get involved

Would you be willing to participate in a Dentistry-related study?
Dr Dominic Hurst (q BDS, 1999), Clinical Lecturer in Primary Dental Care in the Institute of Dentistry, is looking for dentists who would be willing to be involved as "public participants" in the design of a study. If you would like to find out more or are interested in participating, please email Dr Dominic Hurst

Can you contribute to a doctoral study on how dentists build their working knowledge?
Dr Dominic Hurst, who is undertaking a DPhil at Oxford, is also recruiting dentists who are mainly working in general practice to record their "Knowledge Encounters" - the occasions when they come across something that contributes in a large or small way to their working knowledge – for a week and to reflect on these in a one hour narrative interview soon after.

The feedback from one participant was: "Interesting, informative, easy to incorporate into a busy working day. Thoroughly recommended!"
