Dear member,

What fun! An exit! Health Innovation Hub company Medo.AI is being acquired by American health information and medical device company Exo. Big Congratulations team Medo.AI. Did you know that Medo.AI used to work out of our cool office space in Enterprise Square until very recently when covid and physical distancing required them to move? Like Medo, if you are looking for space for your health or life science venture and would like a tour, please email healthub@ualberta.ca with your request and we will be happy to help you.

Our vision is to bring together the health innovation community so we can continue to learn from one another and grow. Our monthly Health Innovators’ Meetup has been receiving a lot of encouragement and feedback from our community with topic requests for panel discussions. For the rest of the year, all our meetup topics will come from our community, starting with the August meetup on From LAB to MARKET. We have an exciting panel of entrepreneurs who will discuss how and when to pull your technology from the lab to the market. Don’t forget to register and reserve your spot today.

To James, this month’s Meet Our Community member, innovation in health means “making health services more available by decreasing costs, using novel techniques, and my personal speciality, applying existing modern computer technologies”.  So true James. And we all can play a part. HIH company Nanostics’ checks all the boxes and needs your help for their research project. They are looking for healthy individuals to donate their blood and urine for their project on bladder cancer. If you are able to volunteer, please email koreayod@ualberta.ca.

If you would like to contribute to the digest, please let us know here. Thank you for reading and being such an awesome member of our health innovation community.

1. What does health innovation/ innovation in health mean to you?

To me, innovation in health means making health services more available by decreasing costs, using novel techniques, and my personal speciality, applying existing modern computer technologies.

2. In your opinion, what is the state of the health innovation ecosystem in Alberta, Canada and globally?

We live in exciting times. Microcontrollers and associated software are now mature, inexpensive, and easily available. For us health innovators, this presents an enormous opportunity to apply these existing technologies to all sorts of healthcare challenges, whether that be reducing complex lab tests to a button press or the next smart health device. This potential for growth is great for health innovation ecosystems everywhere because of the numerous opportunities to apply existing computer technologies.

3. What motivated you to join the Health Innovation Hub?

Starting a business is hard. Starting a health business is harder, and the easiest way to learn what you don't know is to talk and engage with a community that has your back. There have been many times where I researched a question for hours, only to have it explained to me in 10 minutes after I asked someone who's been there before. Tricca was motivated to join so as to save time, learn, and hopefully help someone else.

4. How would you describe yourself in one sentence?

I am a technology-loving, Linux-using, prototype-building entrepreneur.

5. What is the one thing you are most excited about right now?

Tricca is nearing the end of another prototype, which is very exciting for us. The new prototype fixes quite a lot of issues and will save a lot of headaches. There's nothing quite like seeing hard work pay off!
