No Images? Click here Dear Friend of PLC STEM PartnersIn late 2015, the STEM Partnerships Forum, chaired by Australia’s Chief Scientist Alan Finkel, was established by the COAG Education Council. The Forum brought together business and education representatives to map out opportunities to facilitate efficient and effective partnerships between industry and Australian schools to improve STEM education. Members of the Forum include representatives from some of Australia’s largest companies, such as Boeing Australia, BHP Billiton, Commonwealth Bank, CSL Limited and Google Australia, as well as senior representatives from across the education sector. The purpose of the first meeting was to lay the groundwork for a more strategic approach to school-based STEM partnerships with industry, to build the workforce of the future and assure the continued competitiveness and prosperity of Australia. Stronger partnerships with industry can engage and inspire students, providing them with a better understanding of real world applications of STEM skills and related career opportunities. The STEM Partnerships Forum (the Forum) has focussed on three areas; Careers Awareness, Teacher Professional Development and Outcomes and Impact. Targeted action by industry, government and other stakeholders in these areas will lead to improved STEM outcomes for students as demonstrated in the diagram below. We need your helpIn response to the STEM Partnerships Forum, PLC is soon launching our own Partnership Programme to more closely align business partners with our staff and students. The arrangement will be flexible so as to meet the needs of both the organisation and the School. Some ideas regarding engagement include: speaking to small and large groups of girls, staff-shadowing opportunities in organisations, student site visits, traineeship opportunities and many more. Please contact either our Head of Staff – Chris Robinson, chris.robinson@plc.wa.edu.au or our Head of Careers and Pathways - Simone Fleay, simone.fleay@plc.wa.edu.au if you are interested in being involved. On other STEM related exciting news, we have had 232 girls express interest in Aviation@PLC! We are currently working on partnership arrangements and will be ready to launch soon. John O’ Donohue, the late Irish poet, theologian and philosopher, responded to this question as follows:
Most of us walk out of the front door in the mornings, minds cluttered, wondering if the children have packed everything they need for the day, rushing to get the car to the garage for the service, thinking about the deadline that we need to meet. O’Donohue reminds us that there is no sacred/secular divide. All is sacred. Amidst everything that confronts us each day, God is imminent, ever close. - Rev Gary Van Heerden Family Service ProjectsWe encourage parents and daughters to plan ahead and secure your dates for the upcoming Term 4 Family Service Projects. Changes for 2018As you are aware, Rebecca Payne will be moving into the Head of Languages roles permanently next year. We are very keen to provide continuity and it is therefore with pleasure that I announce that Gemma Freel will lead our current Year 11s into their final year in 2019. Gemma was formerly their Year Co-ordinator in Years 7 - 9 so already knows the girls and families. She is looking forward to reconnecting and guiding her girls through Year 12. Sarah Kelley, who brings with her a wealth of experience in both pastoral and learning capacities, will move into the role of Year 11 Learning Co-ordinator, as Patricia Higgins takes leave for the year. This means some changes in the Year 7/8 hub and I am excited to share the good news that Luciana Cavallaro our teacher librarian (and resident author) will take on the role of Year Co-ordinator for our 2019 Year 7s. An overview of positions in the Hub teams for 2019 is provided here. Everest Leadership WorkshopLeadership development is important at PLC. We want all of our girls to have the skills to lead; whether that be now, or at some stage in the future. Our Everest programme has therefore been extended this year, to include all Year 12s, not only our elected student leaders. Our Director of Finance, Sam Kronja, will deliver training in the Seven Habits of Highly Successful People as part of our line-up of events across the day. We are very grateful for Sam’s expertise, passion and generosity of time. We have an exciting programme lined up and are looking forward to working with the girls to develop their capacity in taking the lead.
