SPEED LIMIT CHANGES COME INTO EFFECT FOR KĀPITI LOCAL ROADS

The Kāpiti Coast District Council is advising motorists that new speed limits for 47 rural roads and three village centres (Paekākāriki, Raumati South and Raumati Beach) will come into effect next week.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services, Sean Mallon, says the changes were decided by Council following consultation with communities earlier in the year.

“We’ll be putting up new and updated signs from Monday 15 July, and they should all be in place by the end of the week. We’d like motorists to keep an eye out for them.”

Scotch : A Golden Dream

The story of Uisge beatha -- Gaelic for “water of life.”

The heart of SCOTCH - A GOLDEN DREAM is the characters - the fascinating people who make Scotch whisky. We explore some of the biggest names in the industry, including Richard Paterson, a master blender whose nose was insured for $2.5 million, Glasstorm, a company specializing in hand-made bottles for rare whiskies that sell for over $10,000 each, and Jim McEwan, the distiller and master blender, a 52-year industry veteran, who acts as our ambassador, guiding us to discover the process and the people, who they are, their personal histories, how they came to immerse themselves in the art and science of making whisky, their drive for perfection, and their dreams

Sustainability important to international tourists – new research

New research shows that international visitors to New Zealand value sustainability and protecting the environment but there are gaps and opportunities for local tourism service providers to do more to promote eco-friendly practices.

Canterbury researchers conducted a multi-pronged study to better understand how much importance international visitors placed on sustainability and their perceptions of sustainability practices in the region. The research was led by Associate Professor Girish Prayag of the University of Canterbury’s Business School and Senior Economist Dr Peter Fieger of ChristchurchNZ, funded by a grant from the Tourism Industry New Zealand Trust.

 Blockchain benefits sustainable food protection

Adapting new data technologies may lead to fairer food prices for consumers and producers, by increasing transparency.

University of Canterbury Business School Associate Professor Michaela Balzarova is conducting theoretical research into eco-labelling schemes and voluntary environmental systems that businesses adopt to mitigate their environmental and social impacts. She is also exploring alternative schemes and to what extent blockchain technology helps to address sustainability challenges that arise from problems of production and consumption of goods and services.

Round two - Grumpy Old Men

The Grumpy Old Men project is underway. Men from around the Kapiti / Horowhenua / Mana region who want to change but in a way that makes sense to them will gather fortnightly to get and stay on track. They will meet from 10:30am to 12:30pm at venues around the Kapiti Coast and maybe even embark on adventures oputside the region.

They will come with different goals and will work with others who help keep each other on track. Everyone is different and a range of solutions will help tailor the best way to help each man get on track.

They will learn about how to make simple changes that will have an enormous impact of their life. They will start a journey that brings them lifelong happiness, health and companionship.

They will learn the skills to manage their lives, manage everyday stress and bring back that champion. But not because of what they have done, but because of what they are.

UPGRADES TO RATANUI ROAD/MAZENGARB ROAD INTERSECTION TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK

Next week the Council will begin works to improve traffic flow at the Ratanui Road/Mazengarb Road intersection in Paraparaumu.

“It’s a busy road and a major link between the Paraparaumu and Waikanae communities, so we’ll be building a roundabout to ease traffic congestion,” says Access and Transport Manager, Glen O’Connor.

“We’ll also be widening the foot path and installing crossing points on either side for pedestrians, including the many Paraparaumu College students who travel to school that way.”
