Links eNewsletter - Term 1 Week 2 Dear valued member of the PLC community, After a somewhat interrupted start to the school year, it has been wonderful to have staff, students, and families back on campus this week. I do hope that all of our new families across both the Junior and Senior schools have felt warmly welcomed into the community and that our new students are all settling in well. I would like to thank all families for their patience and support during the first two weeks of school and, all going well, look forward to a smooth and positive year ahead from this point. I do hope that 2021 is a happy and successful year for everyone. I look forward to being able to meet with you all at the rescheduled PLC Parents Welcome Sundowner and some of the other great events coming up. Please refer to your campus Dates for your Diary and also the Whole School Dates for Your Dairy at the bottom of this eNewsletter. - Cate Begbie – Principal In this first week back to face-to-face teaching it has been wonderful to have all students and staff back on campus, especially our boarding community. After the false start the weekend before lockdown, new boarders and returning boarders alike have been welcomed by a new-look to the Boarding House with Hamptons-inspired furnishings – thank you Leonie Neervoort. Above: Year 7 boarders Above: The newly refurbished Boarders' Sitting Room We also warmly welcome our new Director of Boarding, Susie Edwards, who will be starting part-time this term and transitioning to full-time in Term 2. The PLC Boarding House is a very special part of the culture of our school. While the number of boarding students has steadily declined at other Perth schools in recent years, PLC’s enrolments continue to increase and this year we have 155 boarding students from Years 7 to Year 12. The PLC Boarding House has a reputation for exceptional quality of care and the staff go over and above to provide every single boarder with a home away from home that they look forward to returning to. In German, the word “gemütlichkeit” refers to a sense of warmth, friendliness, comfort, belonging, and wellbeing; this aptly describes the special environment that Katherine Hazelwood, Kirsty Nugent, and the entire boarding house team have created at PLC through their dedication to the students and the school. I had the opportunity on Monday to speak with a number of Year 12 boarding students who said they love their strong friendships and connections as well as having access to facilities like individual bedrooms in Year 12, the kitchen, swimming pool, and the Junior School playground. They appreciated being supported in their education with in-house core subject tutoring, provided by PLC Senior School teachers Monday to Thursday evenings. Boarders are also encouraged to pursue non-PLC sport and activities on the weekends and you will often see one of our PLC buses ferrying the girls to their activities. Despite the challenging circumstances, I have found working more closely with the boarding community hugely rewarding and enjoyable and it has newly brought to my attention how special our Boarding House is.
- Chris Robinson – Deputy Principal Welcome BackIt was wonderful to see the girls back in person on Monday. There was palpable excitement and joyfulness in the Junior School, yet students and their teachers got straight to work after getting a jumpstart last week! Support Your Daughter EveningWe have decided to create a video Support Your Daughter Evening for parents with all the important information for the start of the year. With the current restrictions in place, we felt this was an effective way of providing our community with the information you need for the start of the year. The information videos should be made available by next week. Furthermore, Parent/Teacher Interviews will occur on Monday 22 February, where each family will have an opportunity to meet with teachers. Further information about the interviews and the sign-up process will be communicated shortly. Year 6 Outdoor Education Programme (OEP)Thank you to the Year 6 families for their understanding regarding the OEP. This afternoon, from 5.00 pm, is the Parent Session in the Junior School Swim and Recreation Centre. The information packs are on the PLC App and were sent home. Thank YouMy sincere thanks to our community for the support we have received regarding the Remote Learning period. The support teachers received from families was heart-warming. My thanks also to the Junior School staff who transitioned quickly to Remote Learning and responded to the varying needs of our families – including 59 new students and a number of online connectivity hurdles. All of the Junior School staff were critical in the success of this period and it is a credit to their professionalism and passion for PLC, our community, and most importantly our students. - Richard Wright – Head of Junior School Year 6 Outdoor Education ProgrammeDate: 16 to 19 February Chapel Years 3 to 6Date: Thursday 18 February Parent/Teacher Interviews (Kindy to Year 6)Date: Monday 22 February Inter-House Swimming Carnival (Years 1 to 6)Date: Thursday 25 February Mid-Term BreakDates: Friday 26 February – Monday 1 March School Campus AliveAfter a week of Remote Learning, it has been great to see all our Senior School students back on campus. The School campus definitely feels alive again and a big well done to all the girls for wearing their masks so diligently. New StudentsWe began the school year with a special assembly to welcome our Year 7 students to the campus. A special thanks to Monet Edwards (Head Prefect) and Dimity Andrews (Deputy Head Prefect) for speaking to the Year 7s about their experiences of starting in the Senior School and the importance of getting involved in all the activities on offer. The assembly finished with the Year 7s being piped out to Scotland The Brave by our Pipe Major, Helen Lovegrove. We hope they enjoyed their first experience of the PLC Roar! 2021 sees many new students, in addition to our Year 7s, starting at PLC. We hope that they have had a warm welcome and have enjoyed their first few days on campus. Speaking to the Year 7s, a big highlight has been getting their own lockers and I must say that the girls are getting very used to mastering their combination locks. Inter-house Swimming CarnivalNext week’s Inter-house Swimming Carnival is set to be a fantastic day of House spirit and participation. I encourage all girls to have a go, get into the pool, and cheer on their peers. A reminder to parents that if you are collecting your daughter from HBF Stadium, we ask that you pick her up by 3.30 pm. For the safety of the girls, we will be transporting any students who have not been picked up by this time to the Boarding House via a PLC bus for collection. Your daughter has also been reminded to ensure she brings her lunch with her (she will not be able to access the cafeteria and vending machines) and that she will need parent permission in writing if she is required to leave the carnival early (please email me at rebecca.watts@plc.wa.edu.au). To help keep your daughter safe, we ask that you collect her from inside HBF Stadium, where staff will be waiting. Thank you for your support with this and I look forward to meeting those of you who are able to attend on the day. Lighthouse Leavers ProgrammeThis week also sees our Year 11 and Year 12 students begin their Lighthouse Leavers Programme. Your daughter has signed up for an activity of interest to her on a Friday afternoon. There are a vast array of options available and below is a snapshot of some of the courses she may be involved in. These options are designed to engage your daughter, provide her with life skills, and help her develop her portfolio for tertiary study. It is important that your daughter attends and we appreciate your cooperation with only scheduling appointments for your daughter during this time if they are essential. - Miss Rebecca Watts, Head of Senior School Year 9 Support Your Daughter EveningDate: Monday 15 February Inter-house Swimming CarnivalDate: Wednesday 17 February Year 7 Support Your Daughter EveningDate: Tuesday 23 February Mid-Term BreakDates: Friday 26 February – Monday 1 March From The Boarding HouseThe Boarding House: Resilience, traditions and a new look!
