Click here Dear Friend of PLC Welcome to Term 1, 2019The sun is shining, the girls are back at school, our boarders have moved into their home away from home; it’s been a wonderful start to the 2019 School year. Reflection and goal setting are important components of being an International Baccalaureate School. We work with our students AND staff on reflection and goal setting activities. Additionally, we look to influence at a System level to ensure our girls have the best possible opportunities to gain the most from their education whilst at PLC and to set them up for the future as life-long learners. Towards the end of 2018, the results from an important study into Confidence and Career Intentions was released. "Hands up for Gender Equality" explored, among other concepts, activities that predicted self-confidence. The study identified 20 activities commonly undertaken by young people and which of these appeared to generate self-confidence in girls and boys. The results identified the following three activities, listed in order of level of contribution, to be important in the development of self-confidence: 1. Travel (particularly interstate and intrastate) 2. Team Sport 3. Participation in leadership roles and leadership development. It’s perhaps no surprise that social media use and computer gaming were the greatest detractors from the development of self-confidence. As a school, we continue to further develop the offering of trips and tours for our girls, including the Outdoor Education Programme that has already been expanded to begin from Year 3 and, this year, we introduced for the first time an incredibly successful Year 12 Retreat. Please click here for a full list of trips and tours available. IGSSA SportIn 2018, a complete review was conducted of IGSSA sport. Significant enhancements have been introduced to ensure more girls have the opportunity to play sport for their school. At PLC, we also offer the Blackwatch Sport programme to allow every girl to participate in an activity, be part of a team and meet new friends. Please click here for an outline of changes made to IGSSA for 2019. Additionally, I am very excited that all of our Year 7 and Year 8 girls will be competing at the Inter-House Swim and Dive Carnival on Monday. Thank you to our P.E team for making this happen. Leadership ProgrammesWe continue to expand and develop our leadership programmes and this year have an exciting list of speakers who will be engaging with the girls, along with specialised programmes in the Discover, Develop, Define and Distinguish Hubs. An audit has been conducted of leadership roles on offer and we will continue to offer new opportunities for the girls, such as the Peer Support Programme which we launched in 2018 and will expand into the Boarding House and Junior School this year. Curricular and Co-Curricular ActivitiesAs Principal, I am incredibly proud of the breadth and depth of curricular and co-curricular activities we have on offer at PLC Perth. Our staff are passionate and dedicated, and work to ensure programmes are personalised so each girl feels known and valued for her unique talents and abilities. Have a Wonderful 2019Hopefully your daughter, or little son, has had a wonderful start to the School year and I encourage you to make contact with the appropriate staff member should you have suggestions for improvement, positive feedback, questions or any concerns. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Year 12 BallDate: Saturday 9 February Parents Welcome SundownerDate: Friday 15 February 2019 International Women's Day BreakfastDate: Friday 8 March
It was fantastic to see the students bound back to school yesterday. The first day of school is very exciting for everyone, including staff. It is wonderful to have the students bring their energy and enthusiasm to their learning community. The staff have worked hard to prepare the School for the girls and 2019 will be an incredible year for the entire community. Thank you to the girls, parents and guardians and the entire community for my warm welcome to PLC. I look forward to getting to know the students and working with families to guide their students toward achieving their potential. What's Coming up
I look forward to meeting you and to an amazing 2019. - Richard Wright, Head of Junior School JUNIOR SCHOOL KEY EVENTSSupport Your Daughter Evening Date: 4 February Junior School Kapture Photo Day (Kindy - Year 6) Date: Thursday 7 February Junior School Assembly Date: 8 February Pre-Kindy and Catch-Up Photo Day Date: 12 February Year 6 Outdoor Education Programme Dates: 19 – 22 February Junior School Assembly Date: 22 February Parent Teacher Meetings Dates: 25 – 27 February Inter-House Swimming Carnival (Years 1 – 6) Date: 26 February Mid-Term Break Dates: 1 March – 4 March Welcome BackIt’s such a pleasure to have the girls back with us, and to be back myself- albeit for a short time. As Beryl Markham in West With the Night said “I have learned that if you must leave a place that you have lived in and loved and where all your yesteryears are buried deep, leave it any way except a slow way, leave it the fastest way you can.” This is a place I have ‘lived in’ and loved, so I am taking her advice and moving on quickly! I hasten to add that I am not retiring – yes – I am now a grandmother and loving every minute of that, but I am not ready to be a full time, stay at home granny. I am looking forward to whatever professional opportunities might be over the horizon for me. In the meantime, Jenny Crisp and I will be combining as ‘Shenny’ as we share the role and the office and I hand over to her. I will be presenting books to the School at the Principal’s assembly on 15 February ahead of my departure at the mid-term break. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new girls. We will do our best to ensure their start is as smooth as possible. Any transition time can present challenges; I like these words of advice from British-American philosopher Alan Watts who says “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” I hope the girls are ready and willing to join the PLC Dance! Swimming CarnivalThe Carnival is scheduled to finish at 3.20 pm. If you are planning on collecting your daughter from HBF stadium, please do so promptly. Any girls who are still waiting for parent pick up when our last bus leave will be transported back to school for pick up there. One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory will burst onto our stage with exhilarating results. Girls in Years 10-12 are invited to audition for this exuberant production, bursting to life with music, romance and dance. Proms Quarry ConcertThe PLC Musicians involved in The Proms Quarry Concert will spend Sunday 3 February in a Music Boot Camp as they kickstart their year. Rehearsals will be held from 9.30 am – 4.00 pm. - Kathleen Plastow, Director of Performing Arts Aviation@PLC to launch in MarchPLC Perth is thrilled to be adding Aviation to the list of student offerings from this year, after more than one third of Senior School students surveyed said they would be interested in learning to fly. We are very excited to announce that PLC is partnering with the Royal Aero Club of WA and Heliwest to offer girls fixed wing and rotary theory classes on campus next year. There is currently a critical world-wide shortage of pilots with a 2018 Boeing survey finding 790,000 pilots were needed across the world in the next two decades – of which 261,000 pilots would be required in the Asia-Pacific region. Girls enrolling in Aviation@PLC would undertake the theory and practical courses outside of their regular schooling, however, would be strongly supported by PLC with the theory elements being taught at school in the Science and Innovation Centre. The information evening will be held on Wednesday 6 February 2019, 6.00 pm – 7.00 pm at PLC Perth. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP by Tuesday 5 February 2019. Students wanting to participate are also encouraged to attend the providers’ Open Days on Saturday 23 February 2019 at Royal Aero Club of WA (Jandakot Airport, 41 Eagle Drive, Jandakot) and Heliwest (2 Harvard Road, Jandakot). Classes are scheduled to start at PLC on Tuesday 5 March 2019. After School Care ProviderFamilies who require after school care for their child are invited to log-in and enrol with our new provider – Extend. Extend is a national organisation providing care for children in Independent, Catholic and Government schools across Australia. Its focus is on quality services for students, safety and respect.
