Kaya (hello) reader,

At WorkCover WA we are committed to innovation and continuous improvement of our internal processes and scheme administration.

Over the last year we’ve been leveraging the power of technology to collect and analyse data about the WA workers’ compensation scheme. These statistical insights are a powerful tool for driving service delivery and improved scheme regulation.

In this issue of Compensation Matters we explore some of the ways we are integrating data with stakeholder collaboration to pinpoint issues, understand challenges and assess impact. From our compliance contact team to our regular insurer and self-insurer reviews, statistical tools help us target our engagement activities and implement strategies to ensure a culture of open and consistent communication with our stakeholders.

OTHER NEWS

Annual insurer and self-insurer-review

Driving accountability through collaboration

At the start of each calendar year, WorkCover WA engages with insurers and self-insurers to discuss performance, highlight areas for improvement and identify systemic issues. Our priorities for insurers and self-insurers have been to:

  • improve communication standards to meet community and regulatory expectations
  • manage claims performance to avoid employer and worker disadvantage, particularly for claims pended greater than 90 days, and
  • drive an accountable culture and ensure adequate resourcing capacity and capability.

Face-to-face meetings with all insurers and self-insurers will occur at WorkCover WA throughout February.

New online training for workplace rehabilitation providers

Consultation begins

As part of our commitment to provide trusted advice and education to our stakeholders, we are improving the ways we provide educational resources to scheme stakeholders. In 2023 we are developing a new online training program for workplace rehabilitation providers, ‘Foundations of Workers’ Compensation: Workplace Rehabilitation Providers’, as an educational tool to enhance knowledge of the workers’ compensation and injury management scheme.

The first of three focus group sessions seeking professional input and expertise from our stakeholders commences this month. Stay tuned for more details as the product comes to life.

Making contact for compliance

Data matching success

Data matching is a powerful administrative and compliance enforcement tool. Since 2022 we’ve collaborated with the ATO to cross-reference data and identify employers without workers’ compensation insurance.

Last year we created a Contact Team to address cases raised through data matching. Members of our Contact Team analyse ATO data, identify possible breaches of the Act, and communicate with stakeholders to provide education and improve compliance outcomes.

Due to the hard work of the Contact Team, we’ve seen a significant increase in cases closed per quarter, as well as a 390% increase in prosecution of non-compliant employers.

Hand and foot injury claim data

Step into February with some handy statistics

Did you know that the education and training industry has the highest number of claims for foot injuries in WA? Or that 60% of claims for hand injuries are for wounds, lacerations or amputations? If you want to learn more about hand and foot injury claims, head to the WorkCover WA website and take a look at our topical reports.

We publish reports and statistics on a range of topics relevant to the WA workers’ compensation scheme. The data we gather is an essential tool for scheme monitoring and enables us to respond proactively to emerging trends and issues.
