Launch of the action guide: Healthier food and healthier food environments at sports events

This week, join the WHO Department of Nutrition and Food Safety for the webinar launch of a new publication, ‘Healthier food and healthier food environments at sports events. An action guide for sports event organizers’, on 24 August 2023, 14:00 - 15:00 CEST. The action guide, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, Qatar, is directed to sports event organizers.

The publication proposes five actions to achieve healthier food and healthier food environments in and around sports stadia, from improving the food offer to preventing harmful marketing. It suggests activities that can be carried out during the planning, operational and post-event phases of sports events.

The high visibility of sports mega-events offers valuable opportunities for potentially larger impact reaching billions of fans worldwide, creating positive perceptions of healthier foods and beverages. Healthy, safe and sustainable diets are important for both human and planetary health, and sports events ought to be an ideal setting to model and promote healthy eating as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The publication draws from the experiences gathered at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, in which 30% of the food offered in stadia had a healthier nutritional profile as per the established criteria.

Join the webinar on 24 August 2023, 14:00 - 15:00 CEST, to hear from experts and national authorities of sports event host countries on how to improve the food offer and food environments at sports events, reflect on experiences gathered at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and explore key opportunities for future events. This webinar continues the webinar series “Healthy foods are not just for athletes – Championing healthy food environments at sports mega-events”.
