SLDL Highlight Queer Resource Center (QRC) Whether you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, asexual, omnisexual, pansexual, or as an ally, the QRC has something to offer you! Our space houses a great collection of over 2,000 LGBTQIA-related books and movies, which can be checked out for free and used as textbooks for classes or research material for papers. Each month, the QRC hosts and partners with a number of offices and clubs for events such as the Queer Bible Study, Ally Training, Trans* Day of Visibility, and Lavender Graduation. AnnouncementsGrad Student Appreciation Week In honor of Graduate Student Appreciation Week, CGU welcomes all students to participate in #GRADitude, a celebration and acknowledgement of the power and impact that peer communities and relationships have on each of us. Students are asked to nominate a peer member who has helped you, and/or made an impact on your time at CGU. Nominations should be emailed to student.life@cgu.edu by Sunday, April 11, 2021. Each nomination should include the name of the student, name of the submitter, and a 1-2 paragraph description on why this person deserves to be recognized. All participants (nominees and nominators) will be entered to win prizes such as airpods, yeti canisters, CGU swag and more. 2021-2022 Dissertation Awards: Call for Proposals Applications for the 2021-2022 CGU Dissertation Awards are due on Monday, April 12. Scholarship for Women in Graduate Studies The Grace Berry Award for Women in Graduate Studies is a need-based award, that also emphasizes academic excellence. Preference will be given to students who are at a more advanced stage of their studies (i.e., who have already begun work towards a thesis or dissertation), as well as to students whose work is related to Gender & Women’s Studies. API Identity: Reclaiming and Creating Our Narrative Monday, April 12th | 6 PM - 7 PM The SLDL Office invites all students to join us for our next kin·dle event featuring the co-hosts of the Perfectly Imperfect Podcast (PIP)! Christine and Regina, the co-hosts of PIP will discuss their experiences as Asian American women, and the complexities surrounding narratives that affirm and challenge what it means to be in community with others. A Q&A session will follow, allowing participants to converse with our guests. OPT Workshop for F-1 Students Tuesday, April 13th | 12 PM - 1 PM SLDL will host an Optional Practical Training (OPT) workshop, open to all current F-1 students, especially those who are planning to apply for pre/post completion OPT during the current or upcoming semester. Big Pitch 2021 Information Webinar Thursday, April 15th | 12 PM - 1 PM Learn all about CGU’s 3-Minute Thesis event, the Big Pitch. Even though the event takes place every November, learn what you can do to prepare over the course of the year. Even though we do not know if the event will be virtual or in-person for 2021, this webinar will still cover the rules for participation, the criteria the judges use to assess the pitches, and the structure of the preliminary and final rounds. CWR Qualifying Exams Preparation Weekend Saturday, April 17th | 8:45 AM - 4 PM Designed for students doing timed exams, written assignments, dissertation chapter drafts, and portfolios, this event will provide the options of either dedicated work time with peers or a combination of work time and facilitated sessions on exam preparation topics. Registration for this event opens two weeks prior to the event date and closes the Wednesday before the event. CircleUp–Stories and Experience as Text Wednesday, April 21st | 3 PM - 5 PM This is the third of a three-part series designed to help educators develop their awareness of and ability to respond to patterns of systemic racism and white supremacy across the educational landscape. It seeks to create more nurturing and inclusive classroom and school ecologies that actively work to disrupt and dismantle patterns of racism at the personal, interpersonal and systemic levels. Participants gain insight for recognizing how these patterns show up in classrooms and learn practical approaches, techniques and habits of mind for becoming anti-racist/anti-bias educators. But how do we respond to feedback? What can we do with it? ISP Workshop 6: Decoding Regional Cultures and Linguistic Differences Within the USA Friday, April 23rd | 7 PM - 9 PM This workshop will help students understand more about American geography as well as the unique culture and linguistic diversity of each region in the U.S. (the South versus the East Coast, for example) plus we will discuss the U.K. and Australia briefly. Additionally, it will allow students to practice more advanced levels of English such as the past tenses and compound past tenses, which are often a challenge for non-native speakers via exchange of information regarding where they have been and experiences they have had from their travels in various countries including the U.S.A. Lavender Graduation Friday, April 30th | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM This event aims to honor and celebrate the accomplishments of graduating queer and trans students at The Claremont Colleges.
