Pro Surfer Warned of Shark by Drone at BallinaWorld championship tour surfer Matt Wilkinson has had a close encounter with a shark while surfing at Sharpes Beach at Ballina earlier this month. The welcome arrival of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) overhead alerted Matt via a warning over the speaker, at the same time a 1.5m white shark surfaced just behind him. Success at Australian Pride in Sport AwardsChairman of Lifesavers with Pride and North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club member, Gary Driscoll, recently won the Out Role Model of the Year Award at the 2020 Australian Pride in Sport Awards for his role in promoting Surf Life Saving as a safe, inclusive and welcoming movement. Nipper Hero in Rip RescueIt was the first week of the October school holidays and 11-year-old Nipper Lachie Muldrock was enjoying an early morning surf at Umina Beach with his father and uncle. Lachie,who is a keen competitor in Nippers carnivals, was getting in some practice on his much-loved race board. At around 7.30am, he noticed two young boys caught in a rip screaming for help. NSW Elite Athletes Burst Back into ActionTeam Borg claimed the first Envirobank NSW Super Team Series event at Swansea Belmont SLSC this month. The team, lead by Nutri-Grain Ironman Jackson Borg (Newport SLSC), is made up of some of the sports top and most talented upcoming athletes, in the water and on the sand, and won round one with a total of 251 points. Round two will be hosted by Bulli SLSC on Saturday 7 November, visit the SLSNSW website for further event info. NSW Rotary Inspirational Women's Awards 2020Three volunteer surf lifesavers have been named as finalists in the NSW Rotary Inspirational Women’s Awards for 2020. Sarah Bugbird from Merewether SLSC, Bianca Manuel from Clovelly SLSC and Molly Parker from North Steyne SLSC are all finalists in the awards which were established to recognise the enormous contribution women in both the urban and rural areas of NSW make to their communities. Heart Attack Victim Rescued in Remote LocationAn outdoor adventure guide and a group of students and school teachers he was leading were rescued in remote Kataway Bay on Sunday after the guide suffered what is suspected to have been a heart attack. Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Surf Life Saving and other NSW Emergency Service agencies and the fact that the guide had a personal emergency beacon (EPIRB) with him, the group was located and transported to safety. Welborn and Verco Claim Inaugural Coolangatta Gold at Bate Bay TitlesNewport’s Lizzie Welborn and North Bondi’s Charlie Verco have taken out the inaugural open division of the Coolangatta Gold at Bate Bay in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, New South Wales. The 25km event attracted 315 competitors in both individual and team events across Open, Masters and Youth events. Drone Alerts Surfers to Sharks at KingscliffDrone speaker technology has proved its worth this month at Kingscliff Beach on the Far North Coast after lifeguard Andrew Abood was able to alert surfers to the presence of sharks close by.
