We are excited to announce that our very own Parramatta Library at PHIVE has been short-listed as a finalist for Public Library of the Year! The Library is open 7 days a week, so if you haven't had the chance, drop in and soak in the beauty of this great place.

This month we have plenty on offer; you can also learn about the publishing of Dreamtime stories, start your family research journey, improve your job-seeking skills, attend the Living Stories Western Sydney Writing Prize event, and more. We also have HSC workshops for students, a brand new Chess Club and lots of online resources too!

Library Short Listed

Parramatta’s new library, housed in the City’s iconic PHIVE building in the heart of the CBD, is in line for international recognition. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) has announced Parramatta Library at PHIVE as one of four global finalists for Public Library of the Year. The winner of Public Library of the Year will be announced in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on August 21, 2023.

 

Author Talk: Dr Terri Janke

Join Dr Terri Janke for a talk on Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property and how it relates to story telling and the publishing of Dreamtime stories. The talk will be followed by a book signing, with Dr Janke’s book True Tracks: Working with Indigenous Knowledge and Culture available to purchase on the night.

Sunny & Clare's Sustainability Show

Sunny and Clare are on a mission to promote sustainability and educate children about the importance of energy conservation. In this engaging show, children will learn how they can make a difference by using energy wisely, reducing their carbon footprint, and helping to preserve the environment. This free show will be held at multiple library locations.

 

HSC Workshops

Calling all HSC students! We will be holding five HSC workshops (in partnership with Western Sydney University Outreach Library) to help students develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in their HSC exams and beyond. Each workshop has a different focus such as wellbeing management, essay writing, time management skills, exam preparation and more. Book now for these free workshops!

 

Living Stories Western Sydney Writing Prize

Join us in celebrating the literary talent of Western Sydney as we announce the winners of The Other City – Living Stories Western Sydney Writing Prize 2023. Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, and Mr. Dennis Wilson, will be launching this inspiring collection.

Enterprise Girls

Girls will receive guidance and inspiration from some of Australia's most successful businesswomen, providing valuable insights and role models for their own entrepreneurial journeys. For participants aged 13 to 18 years.

English Conversation Interviews

Would you like to enrol in an English Conversation course, that will be delivered by experienced and trained teachers? You will need to attend an interview beforehand, so you can be evaluated and assigned to a suitable class level (for post beginner or intermediate level).

SEE Pathways: Job Skills Course

This six-week course, in partnership with MTC Australia, is designed to help job seekers who are ready to apply for entry-level employment opportunities. The course focuses on job-seeking skills, Microsoft Office, career planning,  Australian workplace culture, and more.

Talks in Mongolian Language at WPCCL

Digital Services Information on Friday 14 July from 10am to 11am. Learn about digital services, such as how to create a myGov account, link services, Express Plus apps, and more.

Scam Awareness on Thursday 27 July 11am to 12pm. Services Australia with the NSW Police will discuss how customers can identify, protect, and report if they have been affected by scams.

 

Chess Club

Chess is a fun way to improve memory, focus, and problem-solving abilities. In this club you will discuss and practice new moves to sharpen your skills on your way to becoming a better player. Players of all levels are welcome.

Coming soon to your library: Picture audiobooks

We are excited to introduce you to our new picture audiobooks, coming soon to our libraries. Each book features a built-in reader that reads the picture book aloud for you and your child. Simply push the play button and read along or listen as the story unfolds. Check out the bilingual picture audiobooks to share the joys of reading in a range of world languages.

Bring the joy of story time into your home with Story Box Library. Story Box library shares the joy of reading and inspires imagination with a collection of fun and interactive stories. Watch videos of famous Australians, authors, and illustrators as they read all your favourite picture books. Check out the Story Box Library app to watch your favourite picture books while on the go.  

 

Ben's Book Club

Read or listen to Growing Grapes Might be Fun by Deirdre Macken in the Libby app. Join Ben Hobson in conversation with Deirdre Macken about her new novel, an honest and funny account of a couple’s move to the country for a fresh start. Pitch For Good Parramatta 2023

City of Parramatta is proud to be running an innovative social enterprise project providing support to local organisations. Join us at the Pitch for Good event on Thursday, 13 July and enjoy a delicious meal while five local organisations pitch the projects they care about, ranging from eco-floral delivery to upcycled tech, a gym that provides upskilling, and employment pathways for the vulnerable. Come along to support a great cause and make a difference in the community.

 

National Tree Day 2023

Sunday 30 July, 10am to 2pm

Registrations are now open for Parramatta's favourite annual tree planting event! Come along to help us plant 10,000 plants at Upjohn Park Reserve Ermington and enjoy a free family fun day with live entertainment, wildlife display, face painting, sausage sizzle, and much more!
