Click here Dear Friend of PLC Co-educational Versus Single-Sex EducationLast week at a speaking engagement for International Women’s Day and this morning at our Junior School Community Tour, I was asked a question about the benefits of co-education versus single-sex education; this question is one I’m asked often. While I’ve written before on research that points to academic achievement whilst at school, a study released in December 2018 turned its attention to both academic and social engagement in the transition to university. In 2005, data was collected that explored differences between single-sex and co-educational students transitioning to College. The results were very complimentary to the benefits of a single-sex education for girls. Interested if this still holds true, researcher, Tiffani Riggers-Piehl, using the same methodology, collected data from 5,888 students in 2016, 1,134 of them graduates from all girls’ schools. The results are truly impressive! The ResultsIn comparison to peers from co-educational settings, girls who transitioned into University from all girls’ schools demonstrated the following:
The study showed girls from all girls’ schools outperformed their co-educational peer graduates on 80 of the measures tested. PLC Perth's Make a Difference Week - Sir Bob GeldofYesterday, many in our community had the privilege of listening to the awe-inspiring Sir Bob Geldof speak. He impressed on our girls and families the importance of cultural competency, community involvement and, to some degree, political engagement. It’s comforting to know that while here at PLC these are areas strongly promoted within our community, other girls’ schools around the world are also supporting in their students an understanding of, and development of, skills in the above areas. When I consider our PLC girls, it is with confidence that we will look to them in years to come to lead our communities locally, nationally and globally. Thank you to Linda Malone, our Head of Service and Community Partnerships, Gabby Woolgar, our Service Captain and all those involved in what has been an action-packed ‘Make a Difference’ (MAD) Week at PLC, and to the Association of School Business Administrators, Western Australia who organised Sir Bob Geldof’s trip to Perth. IGSSA Swim Carnival - Go Team PLCThe 2019 IGSSA Swim Carnival is scheduled for this Friday 15 March at HBF Stadium, commencing at 6.00 pm. PLC’s swim team have been working hard at trainings, under the guidance of Ceinwen Roberts – PLC/Scotch Head Swim Coach. We wish the swim team well for the carnival. There will be a Live Stream of this event. Click here to watch it tomorrow night. New Music CentrePlans for the School’s new Music Centre are a step closer with the submission this week of the development application for the building. Key staff have been working with School Architects, Parry and Rosenthal, on the design of the Music Centre, which will feature ensemble rooms, teaching studios, student break-out areas, pipes and drums facilities, a music library, recording studio, intimate performance space, instrument washing facilities and storerooms and staff offices and facilities. The four-level building will also boast a rooftop terrace, state-of-the-art acoustic facilities and extensive terraced landscaping. The building will be located on the Junior School campus, between Finalyson House and the Junior School building, fronting McNeil Street. All three buildings will be connected via access links. It is very exciting to get to this stage. The need for a dedicated Music Centre has been part of the School’s plans for more than 15 years. Along with a Science and Innovation Hub, it was identified as a priority in the School Master Plan, which was finalised after extensive consultation last year. The anticipated cost of the building is $4.6 million and will be funded through the School’s existing capital budget. It is expected the Music Centre will be completed by the end of 2020, ready for its first students at the start of 2021. - Dr Kate Hadwen, Principal Year 12 Play - BOING, BOOM, BUSTDate: Wednesday 3 April and Thursday 4 April 2019 Easter ServiceDate: Friday 12 April Boarders MarketDate: Friday 12 April PLC OCA Art ExhibitionDate: Friday 24 May - Sunday 26 May Please note that all parent events are listed in the Communications & Engagement section of Links. A Tour of the Senior School for Year 6 StudentsNext week, our Year 6 girls will have the opportunity to tour the Senior School and enjoy lunch with the Senior girls! Many of the students have an excellent understanding of the Senior School facilities, however, some would not. As the students coming to PLC in Year 7 would have had a tour of the Senior School, we believed it was apposite for the Year 6 girls to also have a tour. Journey Through SchoolOne of the great joys of working in a Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12 school is the students looking forward to specific signposts along their journey. These can vary for the individual and may include moving from the pinafore to the skirt and blouse; attending a first Outdoor Education Programme; moving up the floors of the Junior School; or transitioning from the Junior School to the Senior School. Assemblies and Chapel ServicesFinally, a reminder to all parents. You are always invited to Assemblies and Chapel services. Her service has been celebrated at a number of occasions over the last five weeks, but perhaps none was as comprehensive and heartfelt as the cocktail party that was held for her on Friday evening. Many past and present staff attended the evening, including our past Principal, Beth Blackwood, in order to celebrate and to recognise the many achievements and the ongoing relationships that Sharon has formed in her time with us. We wish her every success in her future ventures and we know that she will be triumph in whatever she chooses to do. I have enjoyed my first week in this role after being Shenny for the past five weeks, and I look forward to the challenges that this new role will offer to me. I have very capable staff working with me to ensure that our Senior School girls continue to feel supported and extended in all their endeavours. Dr Jane GenoveseDr Jane Jenovese presented an information session for our PLC parents on Tuesday evening, providing information on how to assist their daughters in studies and to manage the call of the digital devices that can distract them. The parents found her information timely and specific. Dr Genovese has presented to our girls on study skills in the previous years and information from her can be found on her website. National Day of Action Against Bullying and ViolenceFriday 15 March is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools. PLC continues to work together with our girls to prevent bullying and build meaningful relationships between each girl so that they have all the support they need. Year 7 Outdoor Education ProgrammeThe first group of Year 7s are having so much fun at the Margaret River Outdoor Education Programme! For some of these girls, this was their first foray into outdoor camping and we hope that they embraced the opportunities presented in the programme. We can't wait to welcome them back tomorrow, a little more camping savvy and probably a lot more dusty than when they left us. We wish our second group of Year 7s, and the staff accompanying them, fair weather and success next week. - Jennifer Crisp, Head of Senior School IB Theory of Knowledge - Parents Feedback NeededMr Damien Kerrigan and the IBDP Theory of Knowledge team would love to hear from any parents who could spare 20 minutes of their time to address how one or more of this year’s Theory of Knowledge titles might apply to their profession or academic area. The Year 12 class are just beginning the process of responding to these titles and will work on them until August. Previous speakers have provided our students with valuable insights drawn from beyond the school context and we are certainly keen to sustain this focus on knowledge in a real world context. Please contact Mr Kerrigan if you feel that you could provide the group with a context with which to consider any of these titles. Student AchievementsCongratulations to Helen Lovegrove (Year 10) whose two novella stories, Adventures in Nowhere and Step by Step were shortlisted for the 2019 Somerset National Novella Writing Competition! 2018 IB graduate, Isabelle Lewis’ application to Central St Martins (UK) was successful! This is considered the equivalent to Oxford/Cambridge in the Art world. After a submission for some re-marks, Caoilin Marstrand (2018 IB graduate) has achieved an outstanding IB score of 44. A huge congratulations to these girls. Boarding House NewsThe first set of intrepid Year 7 explorers are off to enjoy their outdoor extravaganza. Find out more in Boarding House News!
