Feedback from Coffee Morning Thank you to the parents from Primary and Middle who attended the coffee morning, the discussion was very helpful. We appreciate your continued support of the school and your voices are important to help shape the school as it continues to grow. Below is a summary of the points raised and any actions that will be
taking place. Communication from the school: We will slim down newsletters so they are clear and more succinct. Text messages will be sent the day before an event as a reminder that they are happening. Parents and carers please check that your email and mobile numbers kept at the front reception are correct as these are our main forms of communication. We will update
the latest newsletter on the website in a more timely fashion, ensuring the newest copy is published when it is emailed out. More regular coffee mornings are being planned and will be published on the calendar, so do keep an eye out for these! There was clarification that our system will only allow the contact who is priority 1 on the list receive text messages.
The Curriculum: Curriculum overviews will be sent home half-termly and will update on the website accordingly.Primary curriculum is not planned yearly due to PBL (project based learning) being driven by student interest and responding to real world problems.
Parental Engagement: We are planning more coffee mornings, so please do keep an eye on the dates in the newsletters.Primary are continuing ‘Bring a parent to school week’.Primary workshops will now be filmed and added to a ‘Google classroom’ which parents will be able to access, to allow working parents who cannot attend access to the content covered. The cost of events is part of funding hire of external venues and to pay for specialist musical lessons. We are looking at offering ‘Family tickets’ to address having to pay for multiple tickets.
Homework:Primary is looking into the options of extending IXL to support the younger years.
Rangoli PatternsThis week in Reception we have been continuing to explore Diwali! We have been making diva lamps out of salt dough and Rangoli patterns out of sand. We also enjoyed problem solving in different contexts, including building bridges out of different materials to help Rama save Sita! Ethan in Newton class thought his bridge made out
of polydron was the best "because it is strongest and it can open to let boats through!". In Maths we have been exploring one more than and one less than numbers and have been getting really good at exploring ideas with our talk partners.
Dizzy DirectionsThis week Year 1 have been learning about position and direction. We practiced tricks to help us with our left and right so that we could do quarter, half and full turns. Once we were confident with using the vocabulary forward, backward, left, right and turn we used these words to create algorithms. We created algorithms to move
a beebot along a path on the computer, to direct toy animals around a track and even to guide each other from one place to another.
PortraitsThis week in Year 2 we have been learning about portraits. We have looked at many different artists and the way they paint people. In particular, we have looked at Picasso. Each child has made their own Picasso inspired portrait. They cut up pictures of themselves and put the pieces back together in interesting ways. Tomorrow,
Edison class are going to the secondary art studios to develop our Picasso inspired self-portraits. They will be using oil pastels to bring colour to their work. Keep your eyes out for the finished product in weeks to come!
Fundraiser Preparation
This week Year 3 have been brainstorming ideas for their fundraiser in order to help the refugees. In groups within their class they discussed what ideas would raise money, what ideas would raise awareness and how they could share information with others about the refugee crisis. Each class has come up with an abundance of ideas to raise money and awareness for the refugees such as food stalls, games and personalised greetings cards which will all be available for purchase on our fundraiser night!
Storytelling
This week the Year 4s have been considering 'What's the same? What's different?' as they compared society in the 1940s and today. We explored the overarching themes of clothes, schooling, entertainment and home life, and tried to come up with an answer as to whether life was 'more the same' or 'more different' to today. The students are really enthused by our World War 2 topic and it's great to see many of them developing their own questions at home and independently learning about the topic. In storytelling, the children used their knowledge of the characters
in Goodnight Mr Tom to predict what they think would happen next, using a story map to support their thinking. As we introduced a new character, Zach, we explored advanced vocabulary to describe personality and practiced inferring information from texts. In Maths we continued to work on strategies to multiply mentally, looking at partitioning numbers in order to multiply. Next week, we will be practicing the short multiplication method to multiply 3 digit numbers with 1 digit numbers. Finally, thank you all so much for supporting with the reading journals. We can sense that the students are starting to take
pride in the amount they are reading, and even getting a bit competitive!
Bright Spots! This week we have seen some beautiful work being crafted across the school. Here are examples from year 1 with Khushi and Tiyana working together to make an underwater habitat and Lizanne in Reception independently writing about The Ramayana story!
