Welcome to Sandringham Research School's first newsletter of 2018. This month's edition is jam-packed with opportunities for you and your school including training opportunities and information about how you can apply for innovation grants. We share new research findings including promising projects from the EEF and some research evdience about grit.  We share our popular blog about linear exams and signpost opportunities for science teachers and leaders to bid for funding to improve outcomes and teacher retention. And finally, this month's free download comes from Teach First.

Local school wins innovation grant

Claremont School in Harrow has secured an innovation grant from the Research School Network to test the effectiveness of using 'knowledge organisers' in English.  Colleagues from Claremont attended an application workshop at Sandringham about writing an application. On January 16th, the 7 recipients of grants were announced by the IEE.  The Sandringham Research School are offering another free workshop for prospective applicants for the next round of funding on January 29th at Sandringham.

Feedback expert coming to our Research School

Harry Fletcher-Wood, education expert, author and Associate Dean at the Institute for Teaching, will be speaking at our forthcoming feedback course beginning on February 2nd.  The course will explore what effective feedback looks like and how to design a feedback policy that is effective and kind to workload. We have also joined forces with academics from the University of Oxford who will be speaking on the third day of our course. There are still places left which you can book via the link below.

The challenge of linear exams

We were really pleased to welcome teachers from across the region to our first training course on maximising success in liner exams. We heard from Dr Duncan Astle from the University of Cambridge and expert on the working memory, and shared a range of evidence to look at promising areas to support students in the reformed GCSE and A level qualifications. New Research School in Ipswich

Highfield Nursery School – in collaboration with Kesgrave and Farlingaye Teaching School Alliance and Springfield Teaching School Alliance – will become the Research School and focal point of evidence-based practice to support the Ipswich Opportunity Area. Ipswich Research School is the twenty-third to be appointed to the growing network of Research Schools.

researchED is coming to Hertfordshire

On March 3rd, the Sandringham Research School is hosting a researchED conference.  For only £25, delegates will be able to hear from over 20 speakers inlcuding Baroness Estelle Morris, Professor Toby Greany and Philippa Cordingley.  To read more about the event and to book your ticket, click below.

UCL research debate

On January 23rd, the UCL Insitute of Education hosted a debate in its #IOEDebates series about the role of evidence in education. The Institute's Director Professor Becky Francis was joined by the EEF's Cheif Executive Sir Kevan Collins, TES Editor Ann Mroz, Ofsted's Head of Research Dr Daniel Muijs and Professor Gert Biesta.  You can watch the debate online now by clicking the link below.

Maximising the impact of Teaching Assistants

Teaching assistants are often not used as effectively as they could be. To help address this, some Research Schools are running training programmes led by Rob Webster using guidance from the EEF’s Teaching and Learning Toolkit. Courses are on offer at the following Research Schools in the region:

22 January: Rosendale Research School, London
19 February: East Cambridgeshire and Fenlands Research School

Oxford event: Where research meets the classroom

On Tuesday 6th March, Prof. Jane Mallanby will explore what research has to offer classroom practitioners by considering "What is evidence?"  Jane will also touch on elements of her book, Education and Learning: An Evidence-based Approach. As an experienced researcher who has worked alongside schools for many years, Jane will challenge, engage and inform teachers about an evidence-informed practice and why it may be the best way forward for our profession.

Wellcome and the EEF open new science funding round

The Wellcome Trust and the EEF have launched two new rounds of funding aimed at science.  One fund is focused on improving science outcomes - more information about the fund can be found here.  The other fund focuses on the retention of science teachers.  Information about this fund can be found here.
