August 2021 No images? Click here Seeing so many sportspeople perform at their best at the Tokyo Olympics is a great reminder of the benefits sport and exercise can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. Not least as we all continue to manage COVID-19.It's also one of the reasons we're continuing to invest in playgrounds, sporting events, and active spaces - so we can all get out and play, whatever our age. We've recently cemented our ongoing commitment to female sporting talent by sponsoring a range of women's sporting events including rugby, soccer and surfing over the next 12 months. In addition to supporting the Newcastle Jets W-League team, we'll also sponsor the Newcastle Knights inaugural women's team's historic debut in the 2021 National Rugby League Telstra Women’s Premiership. Support for our youth is also a priority with eighteen new trainees, apprentices and university graduates joining City of Newcastle this month, while a 12-month partnership with Career Links to provide employment and workplace learning opportunities for young people is helping to fulfil a pledge made as part of the City Taskforce's Youth Employment Charter. To find out how you can get involved visit careerlinks.nsw.edu.au A room with a view and more is on its way with the final touches being applied to two of the City’s most iconic coastline venues at Shepherds Hill Cottage and the Dixon Park Beach kiosk on Bathers Way. Next, we'll be searching for operators to bring the spectacular spaces to life. The upgrade and subsequent openings of these two venues under new operators will give locals and visitors a new opportunity to appreciate their stunning coastal environment. COVID-19 is still with us and we understand that many people and businesses in our community are facing an extremely challenging time which is why we're extending hardship support to businesses and residents in the community affected by the latest restrictions. Ratepayers experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to seek assistance by contacting City of Newcastle’s Rates Team on 02 4974 2307 or rates@ncc.nsw.gov.au For more information, visit City of Newcastle’s Pay Your Rates webpage. Work set to commence on Wallsend Active HubEarlier in 2021, we asked for your feedback on plans for a $1.5 million active hub in Wallsend and the overall response was positive. You welcomed this exciting addition to Wallsend and so construction will start in August. Wallsend Active Hub features an expanded playspace, pump track for bikes, scooters and skateboards, multi-sport courts, rebound wall, climbing wall and fitness stations as shown in the original concept design. Additional shade shelters have been included in the final design in response to community feedback. The construction of Wallsend Active Hub is supported by a $500,000 grant from the NSW Government’s Resources for Regions fund. Find out more about the project here. Four more reasons to get activeWork has started to triple the number of basketball courts located within the inner city’s National Park thanks to the popularity of the courts that opened there in September last year. Based on the demand, we’re continuing to re-activate the area by increasing the total number of basketball courts to six, making it easier for the community to get outdoors to participate in casual sport and exercise. Community feedback shapes new vision for ForeshoreFollowing extensive community consultation in 2020 and earlier in 2021, we've released an updated vision for Newcastle's Harbour Foreshore. The revised concept for Foreshore Park has an additional 4,000m2 of playspace with more picnic areas, trees and gardens, cycleways, as well as new plans for the Wharf Road Precinct. It also includes increasing the size of the fenced regional-level accessible and inclusive playground, a significant waterplay space, a cultural heritage walk that links back to Newcastle’s Indigenous heritage, and improvements along Wharf Road and Tug Berth Lane. The draft Harbour Foreshore masterplan will be on public exhibition for broad community feedback later this year. Learn more about the vision for the Harbour Foreshore.
