Georgia Tech Model United Nations Hosts Annual High School Conference

Over this year's Fall Break, Georgia Tech's Model United Nations, advised by Vince Pedicino, hosted the 2016 Model UN High School Conference. The Georgia Tech Model UN High School Conference is a two day conference for high school students that takes place on Georgia Tech’s campus, located in the heart of Atlanta. Established in 1998, GTMUN has strived to provide delegates with unique insight and perspectives into the most complex and pressing global issues faced by world leaders. GTMUN prides itself as being a venue in which the brightest minds in the region come together to learn the significance of diplomacy, to gain new perspectives on global issues, and to gain a meaningful understanding of teamwork, leadership, and collaboration. Run by Georgia Tech students from a variety of majors, GTMUN offers a range of committees and issues for high school students to enjoy.

This year's Secretary General was Anna Malcom, a 4th year Nuclear and Radiological Engineering major. Next year's Secretary General will be Zara Albright, a 2nd year International Affairs and Spanish major.

The Nunn School is very greatful to these hard working students for their months of time and energy that led to a fanstatic coneference!

Upcoming Event: Responding to Tragedy: A French Perspective on the Challenge of Terrorism

Please join the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER), The Center for European and Transatlantic Studies (CETS), and the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy (CISTP) as they host Consul General Louis de Corail, on November 3, 2016, 11:00 am - 12:00 pm, who will discuss France’s strategy for combating the threat of terrorism within its own borders and how it is cooperating with nations around the world to halt this global threat. The event will take place in Scheller College of Business, Room 102.

Nunn School Sponsors World Affairs Council of Atlanta Discussion

The Nunn School, along with Georgia Gwinnett College ROTC and J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Executive Doctorate Program, helped to sponsor the World Affairs Council of Atlanta host a discussion on Inside Pakistan: the bin Laden Raid led by Ambassador Cameron Munter. Lincoln Speaks at Understanding Colombia’s Historical Moment

Dr. Jennie Lincoln, Professor in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the Director of the Americas Program of the Carter Center spoke at the Understanding Colombia’s Historical Moment event at the Emory University School of Law. The other speaker was Colombian Ambassador to the US Juan Carlos Pinzón

Nunn School Alumnus Returns to Speak with Students

Nekabari L Goka, MSIA '14, returned to the Sam Nunn School on Thursday, October 13, to explain how he leveraged opportunities at Georgia Tech to build a career in the energy field. Currently working as Manager of Operations and Regulatory Affairs for NRG, Nekabari spent his time at Georgia Tech focused on International Trade and Science and Technology policy. He worked in Dr. Michael Best's lab and held positions at both the Georgia Department of Economic Development and SD Concepts while in school.
He shared with graduate and undergraduate international affairs students three keys to success: 1. Don't shy away from opportunities to speak in front of a class. 2. Develop skills in data analysis. 3. Don't just become a good writer of policy. Become a good policy reader.

Kosal Speaks at Society for the Study of New and Emerging Technologies

Nunn School Associate Professor Margaret E. Kosal spoke on “Emerging Science and Technologies: Diplomacy, Security, and Governance” at the Society for the Study of New and Emerging Technologies (S.NET) 8th Annual meeting 11-14 October 2016 in Bergen, Norway. Kosal’s talk discussed approaches and challenges to science (and technology) diplomacy and the security challenges of balancing realization of the beneficial implications of emerging S&T while minimizing the potential harm and other threats.

Fabry Participates in University of Iowa Provost's Global Forum

Prof. Mikulas Fabry was invited to participate at the University of Iowa Provost’s Global Forum: The Nation, the State, and the Global Redefinition of Self-Determination.  On October 14, he spoke on the opening panel titled Self‐Determination, Secession, and International Law in Iowa City, IA.  On October 15, he took part in a televised debate on the evolving definition on self-determination for a University of Iowa program World Canvass in Des Moines, IA.

Goodman and Darsey Speaks at ISA Meeting

INTA PhD student Jonathan Darsey and Regents’ Professor Seymour Goodman delivered papers at the Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association (ISA) – South, in Shepherdstown West Virginia, October 14-15, 2016. The theme of the conference was “Global Aspects of Civil War: Impact and Consequences.” Mr. Darsey’s paper was on “Evidence vs. Myth: Using the Armed Conflict Location & Event (ACLED) Dataset to Better Understand the Second Half of Burundi’s Civil War, 1997-2006.” Prof. Goodman spoke on “International Impact and Consequences of the American Civil War: Ironclad Warships.” Prof. Goodman also chaired the session on “Cyberspace, War, and Regulation.”

Georgia Tech Students Participate in Diplomacy Conference

Georgia Tech, in partnership with Daisy Alliance, hosted the Third Annual International Diplomacy Conference on October 22, 2016 in Student Success Center, President’s Suite. Sixty nine students from three Atlanta schools, Georgia Institute of Technology, Morehouse College, and Spelman College participated in a free-play simulation exercise on the topic of a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free-zone. Georgia Tech was represented by 15 students.

Former President of Costa Rica Visits Lincoln's U.S. Foreign Policy Towards Latin America Class

Former President of Costa Rica Laura Chinchilla visited Dr. Jennie Lincoln’s U.S. Foreign Policy toward Latin America (INTA 4500) class on October 24th. She discussed U.S. relations with Costa Rica and Central America and explained her current role as head of the first Organization of American States (OAS) election observer mission for the forthcoming U.S. elections.

Kosal Visits Augusta University

Dr. Margaret Kosal, visited the Department of Political Science at Augusta University on Oct. 24 and 25 to present “WMD Proliferation & Emerging Technology: Challenges to Strategic Stability & New Terrorism Threats.”

Dr. Gregg Murray, chair of the department of Political Science, said Kosal’s visit presented a truly unique opportunity for students.

“We’re really excited to have Margaret Kosal visit us here at Augusta University,” Murray said. “It’s not just every day that you get to hear from and pick the brain of an expert on real-world bioterrorism and biodefense.”
