Click here October 2017 With the celebration of Thanksgiving, we in the faculty took the time to spend time with our families and loved ones and perhaps slow our busy lives just a little to enjoy the small things. We are grateful for everyone who participated in our amazing alumni activities in Edmonton, across Canada, and in Shanghai during this past year. Please take a moment to look through the photos from September’s Alumni Weekend and some of the recent class reunions. We especially thank those from the Faculty who received University of Alberta Alumni awards presented at the Jubilee Auditorium on September 25. Lorne Warneke, ’67 MD, ’63 BSc(HonsCert). Lorne Warneke is not only a psychiatrist, but also a clinician, teacher and advocate for the rights of LGBTQ individuals. He has fought tirelessly against the stigma associated with mental illness and is a champion for transgender rights. William Patton, ’86 BMedSc, ’88 MD. Bill Patton works and teaches at the University of Alberta Hospital on the Acute Care Emergency Surgery Service and is an associate clinical professor of surgery. Holding the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel he recently received the prestigious John McRae Memorial Medal from the Canadian Medical Association in 2016 for exemplary service. Nicole Cardinal, ’12 MD. Nicole Cardinal goes beyond her clinical role as a doctor at the Saddle Lake Health and Wellness Centre to improve the physical and emotional health of her community. The initiative would not only help the community and students, but would also align with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action for improved medical education in Canada. David D. Otto, ’86 BMedSc, ’88 MD. David Otto is one of the most renowned orthopedic surgeons in Canada, a position that landed him a spot as part of the Edmonton Oilers medical team. He is also surgical director at the University of Alberta Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic and associate clinical professor in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery. We are thankful also for the “shoulders of giants” upon which our Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry was built upon to become one of the most successful academic health research and teaching centres in Canada. This month we celebrate Dr. John Callaghan who performed the first successful open-heart surgery at the University Hospital 61 years ago. Visit our Faculty website often for stories on our history. Thank you for staying connected. Richard N. Fedorak, MD, FRCPC, FRCP (London), FRCP (Edinburgh), FRSC Dennis Kunimoto, MD, FRCPC
