Middle School Newsletter

To our Middle School Community,

Just like that we're half way through the half-term! As the Easter holidays approach, we have a busy few weeks ahead of us, full of exciting events. Please browse this week's newsletter for all the updates from last week and information on all things upcoming.

Meetings
We are always happy to meet with parents to discuss any ideas, concerns or questions you may have. Ensuring our parental community feels supported is very important to us. Please be aware, however, that due to teaching timetables, other meetings and events we are not often able to meet you immediately. If this is the case, please let the office know who you would like to see and give a brief overview of what you'd like to meet regarding and we will get back to you as soon as we are able to.

First Aid Update
All First Aid Incidents will now be reported online using Medical Tracker. Parents will be notified by email automatically when a First Aid Incident occurs. Phone calls will continue to be made for more serious incidents. Please ensure that the School is notified immediately of any change of Personal Details.

Office Hours
Due to the confidential nature of information shared in the front office we ask that parents wait outside if you are collecting from clubs.  Parents should not be waiting in the Front Office reception area after 4:30pm without a staff member.

Your support on all of these standards is very much appreciated!

Parents' Evening

A big thank you to all the parents who came in to meet with us last week. It was great to talk to parents and carers about their children, their progress and the Middle School overall. If you have any further feedback you'd like to share with us, you can do so by following this link: https://goo.gl/forms/oOiGWcuMPaDue1HG3

Playground Equipment Plea

In the first week back we sent out about 30 new basketballs, footballs and soft playground balls out into our Middle School playground. Pictures of these are included below. Unfortunately, we only have about 6 of these left already! If a middle school playground ball turns up at home, please ensure your child brings it back into school. The equipment at play ensures that these free times are engaging for your child. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Year 5 at the Imperial War Museum

Snowdon class visited the Imperial War Museum last week as part of their current project on World War 1, inspired by the Michael Murpurgo book Private Peaceful. The students were able to explore original, authentic artifacts, which will inspire their own WWW1 Poetry the are currently writing in lessons. Machu Picchu and Matterhorn will have their visits to the museum this week on Thursday.

Lanterns brighten up the Night Walk

Despite the windy weather, a dedicated group of Y6 students, their parents, teachers and a wonderful Y8 leader completed our long-awaited Night Walk! Please remember to send in your donations in an envelope by Friday this week so these can be sent through to lanternprojects.org. There is a small prize for the person who has managed to raise the highest amount! Year 7 are also working on lanterns this term and will hold a non-uniform day before the Easter holidays to raise more funds for the projects the students have selected to support. Thank you to the staff and parents who came along on Friday to support the windy walk!

Debate Mate Competition

Last week out Year 5 and Year 6 debate teams traveled to Rotherhithe primary to compete against other schools in the latest Debate Mate Urban Debate League round. The teams did very well and despite only one win out of four debates, the scores were very close - mostly missing out by 1 or 2 points! A whole day debating competition is coming up soon - watch for more information regarding this from Mr Starkey soon.

Next Family Film Night

The next family film night is coming up this Friday, 22nd March! Come along to watch Princess Diana and the other Amazon warrior women fight for justice! We ask for a £1 donation which includes snacks and squash. We hope to see lots of people there! We will start the screening from approximately 5:30pm and the film will run until about 7:30pm. You are welcome to bring comfy pillows and blankets if you'd like.

Science Week is out of this world!

Last week School 21 celebrated British Science Week with a school-wide theme of 'Mission to Mars'. Each year group took a different focus on this theme, completing special activities and lessons in class throughout the week. Year 7 took part in a class debate with the motion This House would redirect conservation funding into space research, arguing if Earth is worth saving rather than concentrating efforts on colonising Mars instead. Year 8 were inspired by the Matt Damon film, The Martian, and used Lego kit to build and program rovers to help set up a station on the red planet.

Recognition last week

Here are the 'Big Names' that filled our recognition board last week. Congratulations and thank you to all who demonstrated working in the zone, choosing kind and stepping up - you make our Middle School community #middlestrong!

The Lunch Menu is Week 1 this Week!

Spring Term 2 Curriculum Overview Letters

We are running a very successful club every morning from 7:45 to 8:25  (last entry 8:10).

I would like to remind everyone of the Breakfast Club Code of Conduct so that parents can share this with their children.

  • All pupils are expected to pack away resources and tidy the area.

  • No pupils to leave the club area without the permission of an adult.

  • Middle School pupils to stay in the club until 8:20. Pupils are not allowed into Middle School until this time.

  • Pupils should help each other and be supportive of each other.

  • Pupils will be warned about inappropriate behaviour twice then parents will be informed.

  • If the behaviour continues pupils will not be able to attend for a week.

  • If conduct does not improve they will not be allowed to attend the club for the rest of that half term.

  • Extreme behaviour will result in a ban.

The club is for everyone to enjoy themselves in a friendly and safe environment. Thank you for your support.
