The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) believes that insects may be the answer to the challenges faced by global society in so far as food shortages with increase in human population. Insects, says the FAO, have good source of animal protein, fat, vitamin as well as fibre amongst other nutrients. It is estimated that they already form part of the traditional diets of at least 2 billion people. The FAO report (Edible insects, Future prospects for food and feed security, Rome, 2013) refers to the need to feed the world population that requires an increase in food production as one of the key drivers of promoting the consumption of insects by humans. DAY ZERO: A water crisis of our timeWater scarcity has the capacity to lead to conflict between communities and nations, warned the UN in a report carried by Thomson Reuters Foundation on the Scientific American website. Citing a report on the dry spells being experienced in the world, the report mentions that there has been an increased fear on water security in recent years. The prevailing situation in Cape Town, a well renowned city globally, proves just how dire the challenge is and how important it is for all of us to take action and use water efficiently and for new technologies to be implemented at national, provincial and local government levels to address the problem.
