Gold Coast Weekly | Issue #30 | Multicultural

Our city is home to an array of different communities. Help us celebrate diversity this Multicultural Queensland Month.

Issue #30: In this week's edition, we're sharing tips on how you can help keep our koala populations safe this koala breeding season, celebrating diversity with Multicultural Queensland Month and how you can nominate a local hero for our Safer Suburbs Awards.

Help save koalas this breeding season

Help save koalas this breeding season

Koala breeding season is here and everyone in the community has an important role to play to keep them safe between now and January.

Our furry friends face increased threats during breeding season when adults move around the city looking for a mate, and the previous year’s young disperse to find their own home range.

To reduce threats to our koalas this breeding season:

  • drive carefully, especially during dusk and dawn
  • contain your dog at night - either in a kennel, small koala-proof enclosure or inside your house or garage
  • always keep your dog on a leash when walking outside of an off-leash area
  • create a koala friendly backyard by ensuring safe passage through the landscape
  • report all joeys without a mother to Wildcare Australia immediately.

Help us monitor the effectiveness of our conservation strategies and report your koala sightings.

If you see a koala that appears sick, injured or in danger, is sitting on the ground, or is a joey without its mother – call Wildcare Australia immediately on 07 5527 2444.

Multicultural Queensland Month

Celebrate diversity this Multicultural Queensland Month

The month of August marks Multicultural Queensland Month, the state’s largest multicultural celebration, with this year's theme 'Inclusion in action'.

Multicultural Queensland Month is an opportunity for everyone to unite and acknowledge that while we may come from different communities and cultures, we all love living on the Gold Coast.

Did you know that roughly one in three residents were born overseas and that more than 10 per cent speak a language other than English at home? Meet some of the people that make our community so diverse.

Safer Suburb Award

Nominations for our Safer Suburbs Awards are now open

Do you know an everyday hero that makes our city a safe place to live, work and raise a family?

Give them the recognition they deserve by nominating them for a 2021 Safer Suburbs Award across one of four categories:

  • individual
  • not-for-profit group
  • business
  • project.

Keeping our city safe is everyone's responsibility. By working together we are building safer suburbs and creating a connected community. Make a nomination before Friday 17 September 2021.
