Greetings from the Dean’s Office!

The fall semester is off to a fabulous start, and it’s hard to believe that mid-terms are only a few weeks away. We had a tremendous reception to the inaugural issue of our new monthly newsletter, We are Wilkinson, where we share many of the wonderful things Wilkinson students, faculty, alumni, donors, and staff are accomplishing.  The October issue contains inspiring stories and fascinating upcoming events – so be sure the scroll to the bottom!  If you would like to share a story for an upcoming newsletter, please contact lsilva@chapman.edu.

Alumnus Harmon Wilkinson, Wilkinson College’s namesake, said in his 1982 address at the Fall Faculty Conference of then Chapman College that to him Chapman “has a soul⁠—has character and purpose.” Having received Wilkinson College’s new newsletter, We are Wilkinson, Dr. Karen Wilkinson, daughter of Harmon, reached out to the college on the newly adopted tagline “the heart and soul of Chapman University,” making an instant connection to her father’s 1982 quote.

Art Across the Border

The Border Project continues to examine borders through interdisciplinary perspectives throughout the month of October with musical events and intellectual lectures. The project embarks on a campus-wide interrogation of border issues, particularly those surrounding the U.S.-Mexico border, drawing from the humanities, social sciences, journalism, and visual arts.

To celebrate Latinx Heritage Month, the Wilkinson College Art Collections Department is highlighting some of the amazing Latinx artists in the Escalette Collection whose work has impacted American art and culture, and enriches the experiences of students, staff, faculty, and visitors on Chapman University’s campus.

Honored for Lifetime of Activism

This week, Presidential Fellow in Peace Studies, Dr. Rozell Nesbitt, is being honored for a lifetime of activism by the Social Justice Initiative of University of Illinois at Chicago. Prexy is a beloved educator, international delegation coordinator, and social justice leader whose world travels have touched and inspired hundreds of students and activists. Wilkinson College is truly honored.

Professor Kozameh Participates in a Historic Reunion

On June 15th Professor of English Alicia Kozameh participated in a historic first reunion of more than 350 female former political prisoners, all of whom were held captive at the Villa Devoto prison in Buenos Aires during Argentina’s last military dictatorship.

This summer Savanah Janssen (BA English '19, MA English '20) found an answer to this question through the Columbia Publishing Course, a six week program at Columbia University in New York. The program acts as an intensive introduction to all aspects of book, magazine, and digital publishing.

The Social Psychology of Hate
10-11 a.m.

Dr. Pete Simi, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology
Hate is part of the human condition. It is both biblical and built into our evolutionary history. The essential components of hate contribute to human survival but also play a leading role in some of history’s most destructive acts including genocide, terrorism, and various other forms of violence. In this masterclass, we will discuss how to think about the essence of hate, how to study hate, and what happens when individual and collective identity becomes organized around hate.
