We return to the USA in May, for our Telecoms, Media & Regulatory Forum in Miami. Comprising a one day Regional Regulators’ Forum on 15 May, and a two-day Telecommunications & Media Forum on 16-17 May. Panels of experts will join the debate with delegates from Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond and explore whether policy makers in government, regulatory authorities and industry are doing enough to encourage investment and develop digital skills. Registration is now open. The 2019 IIC Future Leaders Competition call for entries will be announced soon. The competition is open to entrants aged 35 and under, who work in the TMT sector, and you can find more information below. Please do circulate the poster and encourage your colleagues to enter. Communications Policy & Regulation Week 2019London, UK In its 50th anniversary year, the IIC returns to its birthplace, London, for Communications Policy & Regulation Week (CPR Week). The Week begins with the International Regulators’ Forum, kindly hosted by Ofcom at their offices, for the most senior regulators from across the globe. The Annual Conference follows, where the rest of the TMT stakeholder community join regulators to continue the discussions around governance, content futures, competition policy, spectrum and privacy, safety, security. Get the whole pictureInterMedia Volume 46, Issue 4 This month we have opened up two articles from the current issue of InterMedia. The first is Tim Hogg’s winning entry from last year’s Future Leaders competition. Tim presented his winning entry, on the sociology of technology, in Mexico City at our Annual Conference in October. The second article is a round up of the entries which were runners up last year. You can learn more about the 2019 Future Leaders Competition, which opens for submissions on 7 May, here. The winner will be invited to our 50th Annual Conference in London (9-10 October 2019). The IIC Italian Chapter and the European University of Rome have signed an agreement which will see the Italian Chapter support the Law Faculty and the InnoLawLab through a series of lessons on Digital Transformation and Data Economy. As part of this, the IIC Italian Chapter will organize a workshop on 17 May, focusing on the EECC: Regulation of Communications in the Gigabit Society. Learn more. The Antonio Preta Prize ceremony will take place in Rome on 19 July. Agcom has put out a call for tender in two prize categories, details of which can be found here. One of the categories awards three scholarships for those under 33 who are graduates in the disciplines of communication science, economics and law. The UK’s House of Lords has called for the creation of a digital super-regulator to oversee the different bodies charged with safeguarding the internet and replace the “clearly failing” system of self-regulation by big technology companies. Read more. Russian lawmakers have established “digital rights” in domestic law as the basis for the digital economy, and have also introduced a package of bills to tackle fake news. Read more. On 5 March 2019 the IIC UK Chapter ran an event looking at the ePrivacy Directive and GDPR, at the offices of Squire Patton Boggs in London. A panel of experts gave their views, and afterwards the floor was opened up for questions from the audience. A lively evening, the speakers provided differing views of how the ePrivacy Regulation might be implemented to incorporate GDPR, and how that could work. IIC Australian Chapter NewsThe IIC Australian Chapter has provided some updates on key themes in the country. The first is that a report of the statutory review of the Defamation Act 2005 has been released. Another update relates to the submissions received to Australia’s Digital Platforms Inquiry preliminary report published in December 2018. The final update looks at the ACMA Communications Report 2017-18. TRPC is a consulting firm run by Dr Peter Lovelock, an IIC Director and Chapter Head of IIC Singapore. This report contains a digest of legislation, news stories and updates from 14 countries in the Asia Pacific Region.
